Hi Jason,
Absolutely! Students should not be allowed to cross this line!
Patricia
give examples but not o detailed
Ofcourse, as the lesson directs, we cannot be a buddy to the students. Our thoughts, words and actions should reflect our professionalism, the depth of our knoledge in our area and the ability to impart this knoledge to our students. Only then we can gain their respect.
We owe this to your student at work or outside work
This is important because the relationship between the student and instuctor needs to be well defined to maintain the respect level.
It's imperative to establish and recognize the "line" between staff and student. This "line" must be respected to protect the student-staff relationship.
Mainly for me is the way i dress and carry myself while in the class. The way that I talk to the students is another way. I have always had a good rapport with my students but i always keep it on a student instructor level.
Hi Rhonda,
How do you go about maintaining a professional image?
Patricia
Hi Mary,
What do you do to maintain a professional image?
Patricia
It is important because it shows that their is no favoritism within the classroom. It's important because the instructor is not a peer to the students, the instructor has more knowledge and their job is to pass that knowledge on in a fair and consistant way.
If you don't have the respect of the students you might as well not teach because they are probably not listening anyway.
Hi John,
A first impression is a lasting one, be it negative or positive. Hopefully it is positive!
Patricia
Hi Enrique,
You should treat ALL students the same. No student should think that another student is being shown favortisim.
Patricia
Hi Jackie,
Instructors should never "hang out" with students. Hanging out with students can be perceived as negative from others.
Patricia
I think it is the best way to get respect from your students. Also, if it is known that you are "hanging out" with certain students, a teacher could set themselves up for complaints of favoritism. Student's might also expect special treatment if they are your friend.
Jackie White
Because having close relationships with some students may feel to others as if their is some favoritism.
First impressions of a messy desk and mistakes on syllabi and hand outs on the first day can take a long time to overcome. A clean well written syllabi and a clean organized classroom will immediately make the right first impression and make it much easier to keep that class motivated with you.
Hi Stacy,
Great response! It is not a popularity contest, it is all about being the instructor and being a role model in every way!
I feel keeping a professional distance is important because we need to show our students how to act in the professional world. We need to be role models for them and to be respected. Oftentimes, we become liked to the point of not being respected, and before long, the students lose focus in the class and you end up passing them because you lost control of the class. That is poor management.
Hi Teresa,
Many of our students really do look up to us in more ways than one. We must act as a role model in every respect.
