Laura,
I agree with your post. I try to lead by example and show how/why it is important. I am early for class and start on time. I also try to relate class expectations to what will be expected of them when they get into their career field. It has worked well for me so far.

Hi Michael,
Students watch our every move as professionals. We need to lead by example at all times and maintain our level of professionalism.
Patricia
Hi Laxmi,
Our students need as many role models as possible. A lot of our students do not have anyone they can look up to professionally outside of school.
Patricia
Hi Catherine,
Exactly, leading starts with the person who is doing the leading, and that is the instructor. We certainly need to lead by example.
Patricia
A student may perceive a close relationship as a way of getting good grades with little effort because of a teacher student friendship.
I have always felt that being respected is much more important than being liked. There are times when we all can start to fall into the "buddy role" instead of the mentor role. It is important to remember that we aren't there to be their friend but to teach them.
Part of teaching is setting an example. Nursing is a profession. As a nurse educator, my professional image speaks volumes about my personal opinion of nursing as a profession. To adequately motivate my students, my image of nursing must reflect professionalism.
I agree, Students need a professional who can serve as a role model for them
Not only are students looking to you as a role model, they may also be looking for a sign of weakness that can be exploited.
It is important to remain professional at all times with students. It is OK to talk with them and be concerned about them, but not appropriate to be a "buddy". Instructors can be role models for students and someone to give knowledge and help students to develop skills. These are the reasons that students come to classes and attend the school. By keeping a professional image, you are showing the student the proper way to conduct oneself in their field of study.
Hi Adreinne,
I agree! Students should always regard us as the authoritative figure! The relationship with students should always be professional in nature.
Patricia
Hi Dawn,
Students are seriously not looking for another friend they need someone who can educate them and guide them professionally.
Patricia
Hi Candace,
You said it! Students should always know their position. Boundaries must be established for a clear understanding of things.
Patricia
It is important so they know that you are in charge. You have to make the boundaries clear.
I agree completely with being a buddy verses being a mentor is extremely important.
With a personal closeness with the students there is a loss of a respect boundary. If the students see you as their equal or their "buddy" there is no perception of authority in the class.
Hi Jim,
I agree! You cannot play both roles and certainly should not. The instructor's role is one of very high standards and professionalism.
Patricia
Hi Kimberly,
I agree! Knowing the difference between the two and practicing the difference can certainly save one's career.
Patricia
Hi William,
I've seen close student/teacher relationships ruin instructors careers. The relationship should strictly be ONLY professional in nature.
Patricia
Hi Kristin,
It certainly is a fine line! You must establish boundaries, yet be personable enough so that your students will want to approach you.
