Hi David,
Students and instructors alike are not in the business to gain friendship. The student/teacher relationship should be strictly business. When a relationship is strictly business there is no gray area.
Patricia

Every curriculum on multiple levels requires different types of assessments that must be evaluated by the instructor. These assessments monitor student progress and therefore place the instructor on an unequal plain with the student. A student or instructor who wants to level the field will eventually feel betrayed by the "buddy" who they thought they had made.

I am a younger teacher, and very close in age to many of my students. I have to work hard to been seen as more than just a peer or budy. I have to do a lot of work to get to the point that my students veiw me as someone they can learn from.

It is very important because it draws a line in the sand. I am younger or the same agae as most of my students. I have struggled in the past with students identifying me as a peer, and tried to take advantage of that, turning in late assignments, using inappropriate language, and not being prompt for class/return from breaks.

Hi Donte,
As an instructor, your role should never be mistaken if you carry yourself as a professional in every way. Students need a professional to emulate.
Patricia

Hi Alicia,
Yes they will. Students should know at all times that they are they student, and you are the instructor. Once student's get each person's role they should not be a reason for the students to cross the line. All kinds of problems begin if students are allowed to cross the line.
Patricia

Hi Timothy,
We have to be role models for our students. Some of our students have no one else to look up to other than us. We have to be the professional that we want our students to be.
Patricia

Hi Don
I agree! It is the instructor's responsiblity to ensure an environment that is conducive to learning.
Patricia

Hi Monica,
I have learned over the years that adult will respect you based on your knowledge, experience, professionalism, attitude, personality, organization, preparation, etc. Respect really is something that is earned and not demanded.
Patricia

Hi Scott,
That's right! At this point, it is all about the student! We as instructors should give them everything we have in order to help make them successful.
Patricia

Hi Jon,
I concur! Once students sense you are a student's buddy they lose respect for you. Once respect is lost, it is really hard to regain. Keep student/teacher relationships neutral and things will be just fine.
Patricia

ABSOLUTELY!!! I want my students to be the best they can be and that means better than me, so I share whatever I can to help them learn

Students go to school to learn from mentor / an instructor experience in the area of study. They are there to gain knowledge, direction and to be put on the road of success in their given area, not to be buddies with teacher.

There is also the aspect of losing the respect of the class if you go the friend route.

It is so important to never cross that line.I am there to teach ,inspire and give the students the knowledgwe from my experiences that will be helpful to them. Its never about me its about giving them the tools for success!!!!!

A professional image is extremely important when instructing adult students because they, unlike children, will not respect you simply because you're "older". Adults must appreciate where you have been and what you have experienced and how much you have accomplished before they will respect you. Always remain approachable and friendly when addressing your students, but remember that you cannot be "friends" with them while they are your students.

The instructor must gain the students respect in order to be effective in teaching the subject matter. Being professional and keeping the classroom atmosphere professional lends itself to you gaining that respect.

students should look to their instructor as a role model and someone to emulate as they move into their profession.

You have to keep your distance b/c students will take advantage or expect easier standards or you to treat them like a friend, and not a student.

It is important primarly so student don't mistake your role in the class for something that it is not. Also it allows for students to have a certain level of respect for you as an instructor while giving the students based off your knowledge and expertise.

Maintaining a professional image is to understand your students, to be able to creat an inviorment of learing, but also to establish you are the expert and authority. You need to be personable, but yet keep things at "arms lenght", you can build a good rapport but yet keep things in proper order. Getting to close to a student, sharing to much personal things can lead to a big problem Fraternization. Class room management is leading the class by a professional example, that includes understanding and getting to know the students without getting personal.
