Hi Jennifer,
Great response! In short, practice what you preach.
Patricia
Hi Jennifer,
You've made it plain. Preparation is key. I love the saying, plan your work, and work your plan.
Patricia
Planning Planning Planning...laid out class schedules.
The most common mistakes that we need to avoid is not being professional and we should set an example to be professional, the way we dress, talk and prepareness and choosing the right words and specially how we handle our class properly. The instructor can't be friend to their students but dont be too strict, shoul know your limitations.
First, don't repeat the same mistakes over and over, even when you change classes. Students talk outside of the classroom and get to know you even before being in your class.
Create a plan or structure to follow but ensure a certain flexibility. There are always some unexpected events to manage.
Change instructional method if you notice that yours is not conducing to an optimal learning progress. As instructor we cater to our students, therefore it is important to adjust our learning style to enhance their attention.
Know your subject well, be prepared, and be ready to cover for yourself when you run out of plans. And when you make a mistake, own up to it. You can't model responsibility and accountability if you don't practice them. No one is perfect, and I truly believe that students appreciate knowing that their instructors are human and fallible. Just be you and let your knowledge flow to them.
Hi Lorraine,
I have found that sometimes first term students have to get back in the swing of things. I like the idea of guided notes. I also like to give my students study guides for tests. Students appreciate any aid that they can get in order to do well.
Patricia
my name is Farrell, I feel being prepared for class set the stage for a successful class. Also keep the focus off myself, give my students the attention for learning.
I give my first term students guided notes to help them learn how to study and organize the wealth of material. Also, responding to student's needs promptly helps them to gain confidence in your ability as well as showing that you care about them.
I give out a schedule of daily lessons plans so that stuents can see the pace of the class and also know what they will miss if they are absent. I frequently remind them when we are on schedule and mastering the material and compliment them for working with me toward that goal. Lorraine
Hi Meron,
We are going to make mistakes. The key here is to use each mistake as a lesson learned and work hard to not make the same mistake twice.
Patricia
Hi Robert,
Preparation is key! Students need us to be prepared so that we can present effectively and share our knowledge fruitfully.
Patricia
Solid preparation of your material and practice of your delivery/demonstration are the best ways for avoiding mistakes in these areas. Being professional, but not aloof, and respecting the boundries of teacher/student relationships will help avoid mistakes in classroom management.
You can avoid common instructor mistakes by overplanning, thinking before you speak (count to 10 and then let your thoughts flow outward, having confidence in yourself and that you will get your message across to your student.
assessing my mistakes and redoing what needs to be improved.
Hi Kilyoung,
What do you do to avoid instructor mistakes?
Patricia
Hi Linda,
I agree. Never let them see you sweat!
Patricia
I would add one thing to the list.
5. Don't sweat the small stuff! :-)
Hi Pandora,
I have had an instructor to tell me he takes a picture of each student, and he studies the pictures that night, and when he returns the next morning, he is able to put a name with a face.
