You want to keep a professional image with students to insure that what you teach is valuable.
The students will view you as an example of a professional in the field their learning.
We must maintain a professional distane from our students because it is the right thing to do. One of our school policies is "No fraternizing with students." We are not their friends. We are here to teach them. Familiarity with a student can change your way of treating and seeing that student. You may want to give them a favorable grade, as opposed to their true grade. They will also take advantage of an instructor if he or she is not seen as an authority figure. You must make them aware that you are not their peer, but their instructor. Its okay to be civil and fair with your students, but it cannot become a personal relationship of any kind. That will keep it professional.
I think that in order to gain the respect of the students it is very important to maintian a professional image. After all the instructor is their mentor for the class.
Hi Yowanda,
I agree! Students need and want to be led professionally. A lot of our students learn professional behavior from us, therefore we must be effective leaders.

Hi Tammy,
At my institution we operate a lot like your institution. I love the whole "CPR" philosophy.
Patricia
Hi LaToya,
Absolutely! I like your outlook on professionalism. Students need us to serve as role models so that they can emulate us.
Patricia
As an Instructor it is important to know and maintain your role. being professional and having limitation not only creates that role model for student but let them know that their are boundaries and that you are only there for certain purposes and that's to educate, guide, and support them in their career.
I completely agree with this statement.
We have a strict dress code at our school as well as require our students to act as if they are in the work place. They are sent home to change clothes if they are not in correct attire. Inappropriate class behavior has consequences, they lose points toward their participation grade. Work that is not up to expectation, missing or late work also have consequences, bad grades.
I haven't heard of "CPR" before but I really like it. With your permission I would like to use it myself.
It promotes the professional image the instructor is projecting in the class. By maintaining a professional distance, the instructor also avoids getting caught up in student issues that do not pertain to the instructor or the teaching staff.
Hi Sylinda,
As instructors we must be professional at all times. Students are always watching us.
Patricia
Hi Akeilah,
Absolutely! Lead by example, and remember action speaks louder than words. Show your students that you are the professional that you want them to become!
Patricia
Hi Ashley,
Students will certainly respect you more when they regard you as being very professional.
Patricia
Hi Kimberly,
Respect is everything! Students check you out from head to toe on a daily basis. They want your every move, and they listen to how you speak as well. Students examine instructors very closely.
Patricia
It is very important to maintain a professional image around students at all times. Once you cross that line all your hard work at teaching and grooming them is out the door faster than you
think it will happen. When an instructor creates the professional image and maintains that image the student will follow forever and will always remember you for introducing that image to them.
Well with being a young instructor, I've found that sometimes students tend to get a little too comfortable with me because of my age or how old they "think" I am. Their first question is always "how old are you?", which is question I have to avoid. It's very important that I carry myself in a professional manner and that I let them know that we are not equal and I am the instructor and not one of their peers. I always tell my students there is a time and place for everything.
