It starts the first day with clearly defined expectations. Starting class on time, this should include having all materials that will be needed. Having knowledge of the subject matter. Have a brief introduction period and give a professional introduction of yourself and also allowing students the same. Make sure students understand what is required and expected of them.

Ellen, excellent post. Another phrase that provide food for thought is to go out of your way to show your interest while at the same time being interesting. Make it about the student but also make sure students feel you are interested in their well being and success while keeping the learning process interesting.

I have found that if you respect your students, they generally return that respect.
It is always important to maintain a professional demeanor as that automatically sets a tone for the classroom & students generally respond positively to that.
It is also important to introduce humor periodically. It makes for a more relaxed atmosphere & I have found that it increases student participation

In my opinion a good Instructor has to be able to "read" his class as well as each individual student and assess when to be the "guide", the "controler" and when to be the "buddy". Students are not a one approach fits all. Instructors shouldn't be either.

It is certainly important to be aware of the variety of learning styles in the group. The successful instructor will be able to adapt to the different learning styles & thus improve student success.

To be in control of the classroom and to effective deliver education

In my option the traits of Successful Instructor; before he/she goes into the classroom it is important that he/she is aware of the surouinding, and have all material need to complete the lecture, have the attendances and know how many students that he/she will have in the class, sume it all up just be prepared, anf know the material.

In order to be successful in the classroom. an instructor needs to be enthusiastic, passionate and enjoy sharing their knowledge to others. It is equally important to be professional and model the standard that you want to see from your students. The first class is a great way to start off the semester as it provides the grounds for everyone's expectations.
It is often helpful to gather opinions and comments from the students and let them discuss openly. Some students will often comment on things that occur in a class that they find are good and also ideas on ideas that bother them as peer talking, cell phones and late work.

In order for an instructor to have good classroom management, I feel he/she should set an example. Be organized, punctual, and respectful for the students, and most will do the same for the instructor.

Patience and love of your work and with well communicated expectations will transcend the drudgery of the day and maintain student interest.

I do the exact same thing when students talk in class. I just stop and stare and it always work. Yes I do believe that is a powerful tool to use too.

Having and open ear and being nondefensive are good characterstics for and instructor. To be able to listen to your students input can sometimes help an instructor manage their class better because every class is different. Being nondefensive opens up communication and students respect the instructor more when they find answers instead of being frustrated and not knowing the answer. Instructors lose respect and therefore control of the classroom when students cannot ask questions.

It is so important to have the ability to read your students. I can tell when I am boring them or they are getting antsy. By walking around and making good I contact the students know that you are controlling the learning environment. I try not to get tunnel visioned and look for the students body language

Successful classroom mangement involves a high degree of emotional intelligence on the part of the instructor. I think this is particulary true when the class demographics involve a mix of just out of High School students and older adults. Although you strive for consistency in the application of dicipline in the classroom you need to allow for some flexibility for the fair and respectful treatment of each individual.

With adult learners, the need for flexibility and understanding is of premium importance. Adults do not want to embarassed in front of the class and since they have specific concerns, a blanket across-the-board rule is more often and not doomed to fail.

Some traits and characteristics that are important for an instructor to have about good classroom management may include respect, patience and organization. A good instructor should treat students with respect, be a good listener, objective, open to hear the students thoughts and opinions while still maintaining a creative academic environment which is conducive to learning.

I believe that if an instructor is enthusiastic each class meeting than that is a positive way to manage a class. The enthusiasm makes learning fun, therefore will make for a proactive approach to eliminating discipline problems.

Instructors should be guide their students to understanding the material they are teaching and guide them to understand how to act in a learning situation. Instructors need to be understanding and organized and teach by example.
