LARRY,
Excellent!!! Students probably think it is not that important....but it most certainly is. And Larry you are so right....it can make or break an interview!

Shelly Crider

Mary,
Good point.....there are times when students are in their own little technical world!

Gurkan ,
Good point....communication can be a career booster as well as being so instrumental in the work force.

I use my own version of "the history of communication." Giving examples of face-to-face communication including verbal and non-verbal cues, communicating on a phone, and text messaging. The plusses and pitfalls!

I am a clinical instructor for respiratory therapy. In this field it is nessesary for practicianers to be able to communicate with the physicians about the the resp. care the Drs. are ordering for a pt. we are treating.I teach the students that prior to contacting the the Dr. they should:
1)Have knowledge of the pts. medical history as well as the events of the last 24hrs.
2)Know the results of the last few CXR's and recent pertanant lab values.
3)Be prepared to explain the rationale for your suggestion of a change in treatment modalities.
Being confident and prepared is the key to successful communication for this field

Effective communication is essential in any business or health setting. It is imperative that the speaker is able to identify casual talk and professional talk in determining the environment in which one may be exposed to. Effective communication skills requires the ability to not only using the vocabulary of one's profession but also exhibiting the ability to recognize the nonverbal context of speech. Further more, individuals must be effective in coding their context in such a way that it is decoded and interpreted as intended by the receiving end of the conversation. Effective communication skills can create a significant value of a person along with the ability to demonstrate professionality in one's trade/skill. Thus, exhibiting effective communication has the ability to impact the rate to which one is to progress within their organization and perceived by their audience.

This is so true. Personal experience will carry you into so many personal work case scenarios, and that's the thing that will carry you far in life.

The concepts for group/teamwork is so vital in todays workplace. Projects are important and so many Project Managers will appreciate new hires coming into the workforce, already skilled.

well rounded students will benefit from all stages and areas of non-verbal communication. Some seem to think that this is new..It's new to them

It is so important that we emphasize the need for effective communication skill. Current multimedia dictates non-verbal skills...no face to face time...so we have to encourage verbal communication

This really hit home for me. I always say that the way you communicate will make or brake an interview. If you don't have good communication skills, you won't get a good job. Period!!!!

I agree education is a requirement however excellent communication to your peers in the work setting is more important because it will demonstrate your knowledge gained through educaion.

I have noticed that many students lack the essential skill of listening. In my clases I stress the listening skills of clarifying, paraphrasing for understanding, and the use of nonverbals to encourage the speaker to continue providing information. I also stress the importance of silence when listening. One cannot listen when one is talking. Students often find this the most difficult concept to master.

This is a great illustration of "knowing your audience". It also provides a situation for critique- and students will likely find it much easier to be critical of individuals that are not their classmates or instructor. Seems like an effective tool!

Virginia,
I like this!! Telling the students the difference between a concept and general subject matter is a great way to enhance learning.

Simona,
Or if the patient is from a different culture or impaired.

Shelly Crider

Linh ,
This is harder that we would think! Students use texting and IMing so much that proper English is hard to remember!

Shelly Crider

I tell my students that in order to learn a subject matter, they must first understand its concept. It is not a test on whether they can memorize the book, but rather, to express the information in their own words. If they are not able to explain the subject matter to their grandparent, then they do not fully comprehend the material.

I agree. When dealing with patients of all ages, it is important that you know how to communicate. Especially at differently levels.

I try to have my students use proper English and proper sentence structure that relates to what they are writing, especially in patient charts.
Effective communication is just not what you can observe or hear from someone, but also how they write down their thoughtd and ideas.
