David,
yes as stated in the course the characteristics are generalized. And what we've found is that this generation is serious about education, but puts the obligation on the instructor to show them the value & why they need it.

My experience with Gen Y is that they are not exceptional multi-taskers. Texting, which is not allowed during class does occur. I find that the majority of the time the person texting will ask me to repeat the information I just provided to the class. I do allow laptops and tablets for note taking and sometimes I will see information on them that is not pertinent to the subject matter during lecture, which indicates Gen Y may not be as serious about education as this course indicated. Of course, description of generations are generalized. I just do not see a lot of this generalized information in my class. I do see their immediate need and desire for feedback.

Steve,
there is definitely a balance between understanding the younger generation & where they are coming from & also making sure that they understand human interactions & professionalism.

I agree with with this in that even though they are attached to their technology, there is a time to let it go and be part of the conversation. Being without their phone for a half hour will not cause a siezure!! Even Gen Y needs to have some respect for others.

I found this to be one of the most helpful bits of information in the course so far. I have struggled with this is my classroom. I know they are the multi-tasking computer generation so I tolerate open laptops. I do on the other hand tell them that if they want to search for relevant information I encourage it. If they want to update FaceBook, do it out of class.

Courtney,
it is a characteristic of this generation, however that does not necessarily mean it is not rude. I would be careful in allowing this kind of behavior, especially with members of different generations.
