Social Networking

It is always advantageous for instructors to introduce social networking and the use of digital technology in the classroom. However, the real key to instruction, as what I have learned from this training, is still based upon the HUMAN CONNECTION THAT IS MADE BETWEEN THE STUDENT AND INSTRUCTOR. (WHETHER ON A FACE-TO-FACE BASIS OR ON-LINE)

Althea,

yes, there are benefits of the social networking & we just need to make sure we are being cautious & professional.

Ryan Meers, Ph.D.

I agree, Sheryl -- I use it often with our students, but I hesitate to go overboard with posts and responses, etc. simply because something could be misconstrued. That being said, I use FB as a way to message students in real time, that often allows them to reach me with immediate questions, as well.

Facebook can also be bad as perspective employeers also look at students Facebook page and may not hire them based on what they see

Agree. Facebook poses many dangers for instructors, but also a few tools as well. Students (at least here) rely on it for interaction and use it a lot, and the poll feature is great, but it has to be monitored and netiquette has to be clearly defined, and it has to relate to an in-class discussion or activity.
