Social Media Use & School Policy

For most students, social media is a common interaction tool. In this lesson we learned that students can be engaged using social media networks like Facebook and Linkedin. Our school has a strict, no communication policy with regards to social media. Is anyone else finding this to be true with your institutions? Any success stories?

Mary Jo,
again this is really up to individuals & insitutitions.

We also have very strict rules and I do agree with this policy. If a teacher crosses the line expectations may happen. Also, it gives us teachers a breather from work space and personal space.

I, too work in an environment where student-instructor connecting via social media is forbidden during their educational career. We do have, however, ways for these social media savvy students to utilize the many platforms to interact with our brand as a whole, and is carefully monitored. It is important for students that communicate in this way to be encouraged to share their great student experiences!

Jeremy,
again, the issue surrounding Facebook is a personal &/or an institutional decision/policy issue. We need to be very careful about making adamant "thou shalt" or "thou shalt not" statements.

I completetely agree that Facebook should not be used to connect students and teachers. I do encourage them to use LinkedIn as part of their professional growth. With regards to Facebook, we do go online and discuss it since one class is specifically around social media marketing and it is necessary to be on Facebook.

Our school has a strict policy on Facebook as well. I do think we have to keep our personal lives and career separate.
