this is a great point. While the Gen Y student is very comfortable with technology, they sometimes only view as useful for entertainment & don't quite see the value & application in the career world.

I also teach criminal justice. Student often do not understand how often technology is used in this field. I have them turn in each assignment via Engrade. They no longer turn in hand written documents or paper documents. They must understand that each report they complete will be done digitally and they often will have to use technology to complete reports and documents.
I don't think arbitrary limits should be set. If the assignment can or should be complemented with technology then the technology should be used. The criteria should be value-add and not incorporating technology for its own sake.
I teach Criminal Justice courses. Each course has instances for using technology. Use it when it "matters" in times when learning content allows.
I think it really depends on their designated degree and how using technology relates to real world learning.
