Learner in Your Class
Why would you want to be a learner in your own classes?
Ruth, I agree that always maintaining the attitude of a learner is the best approach for an educator.

Theory unproven. Life experiences wholes more weight. My students experiences that they share in class help everyone relate to the topic I am lecturing about. I enjoy learning from my students which helps me be a better educator.
Cecilyn, I think the best teachers learn as much from their learners as the learners learn from them.

You learn something new everyday, even if you are an instructor. Like someone else mentioned, most students have jobs. Each job does things differently. Letting your students express what they've experience help keep them engaged in the class. It may not be a job you are familiar with so you're learning something new as well.
Amy, when we set the environment for fun, learning is enhanced.

I too am very animated. I will go to great lengths to get my students to remember information. It makes it fun for both of us.
Richard, experience is the best teacher. The best educators I know are always tweeking the way they teach to continually make it a better class.

Hudson, I would like to take one of your classes. High expectations, plus a fair teacher, make for successful learners.

Because I bring a unique perspective to he class by having so many years of experience I can give them a sense of excitement about what to expect as well as interesting and true events and thereby engage them.
The classroom dynamic that's been created is open, friendly and curious. We all engage in classroom discussions and try to keep the love of learning alive.
I am still a practicing nurse and I'm back in the classroom for the first time in over 30 years! I, too, have found that the stories of my personal experiences in the field really catch the students' attention. When I see that glazed look come over their faces, I know it's time to reinforce the concepts I'm teaching with another tale!
I bring a lot of passion and energy to my teaching, both in the classroom and clinical.
I strive to create an engaging learning experience and try to remember the topics I struggled with in nursing school.
Also, I am tough but fair. Students always know where they stand with me and can count on me to be consistent and follow the policies of the program. I don't play favorites and I hold everyone to the same standards.
I always appreciated the instructors who pushed me to be better, and I know I am exactly that kind of instructor.
I teach the same class at least 3 times a year. Every time I give the class I learn what does and does not engage the students. This gives me the information I need to tweak my presentations so I can connect with all types of learners.
My learning style may be fun and exciting to me but the some of the students may not feel the same. I want to be able to connect with most of them and if I were a student I could better understand what I may be lacking in some more than others. I need to see me from their perspective and be able to build on the negatives and the positives.
Wendy, life experience truly is a golden resource for learning. We show that we value everyone's experience when we ask our learners to share theirs.

Everyone can always learn more. There have been situations where a student has informed the class of a certain experience they have encountered & I have learned a few things.
Equanda, it would give you insight as well as experience as to how learners feel.

I would want to be a learner in my own class because I need to learn my students on how they are learning the materials and at what rate.
Ryan, I wish I was a learner in your class myself. I love your approach and its vareity. Thank you for sharing.
