Victoria, I think the matching cards will work well for you.

Tina, I agree that sports related activities are usually well received.
Michele Deck
They love them, games keep them alert and eager to learn.
The only concern is how long they are going to keep that knowledge intact.
One way I check their summative knowledge is by asking them to write a letter to a friend/family explaining their reason not to attend a get together because of illness using minimum 20 medical terms
Its hard to use an physical activity in my class because the students have to use a book to get the right answers. We code by taking a disease and or procedure and finding a code number to match. We also half to look thru a operative note or discharge summary to get the information out of the record. I will try to use the matching cards for the policys and procedures that we have to follow when coding records
I think games have a positive impact on most students.I've had students that were a little too competitive turn a fun activity into becoming argumentative but reinforced it's not about winning or losing it's about what you are learning from the material. I like the baseball game. I haven't really run across to many females that didn't mind a sport related activity. It's not so much about the game as it is about the enthusiasm and learning behind it. I do like the headlines as well. Good idea
Julie, I really like the way you are asking students to write and interpret each others sentences.
Michele Deck
The first day of class I play icebreaker games. I also like to play learning games such as Jeopardy, sentence interpretation (each student creates sentences using medical terminology then the other students interpret), and Do you hear what I hear? (the instructor calls out elements the students write element and meaning)reinforces element's spelling, meaning, and word pronunciation. I find students love the interaction and friendly competition of games.
Lois, I like it when my teams name themselves as well.
Michele Deck
Betty, it is good to have them research and present.
Michele Deck
The responses of the students are tremendous! Activities make them part of their own education (whether they realize it or not)and comradarie is created. The student interaction is enjoyable and they are learning. My students actually create names for their teams, i.e.: from "the overachievers" to simply "the back row".
Overall I have had positive reception of the games used. However I do get the that question was easier than my question. Most students enjoy the break from the same old same old. I have even had the students write the questions.
I find that the activities that I have used in the past have been very benificial. It gets them up and involved. For instance when I teach on law and ethics I give my students a senerio that has happened and I have them do research and to present the case.
I have found that some students do not like to participate in these games unless I tell them there is extra credit. Most students do enjoy the games that I use in class since they do not have to sit there and listen to me talk. Especially in classes like Medical Terminology
Rita, I'm glad you have seen this idea used with success. It is easy and effective.
Michele Deck
The students welcome the change in pace and it shifts their attention away from the books and lecture material in a constructive and educational manner.
We have an English instructor here that uses the Koosh balls to toss at the students when they make a error in grammar! They love it!
They love to play it helps them learn better
Allyson, I believe students will come on the journey if you invite them to come.
Michele Deck
Initially the students look at you like you've got 3 heads, and there are always a few students who tend to make an excuse to not play. But for those students who do participate they soon get into it. By the end of the game everyone is enjoying themselves and usually realize that we've covered more information then they thought.
Jeanie, this is a great involving technique and I'm glad you have some new ideas, too.
