Thats a good idea, having students work on them after exams.

• Better participation
• Better grades
• Better long-term memory ( shows up on finals)

Kamice, if you incorporate review within class it is most effective. Some wait and do not reinforce immediately. I like your approach.

Michele Deck

Kamice, this is great tooffer review throughout, not only at the end. Students can see their progress this way.

Kim, giving the learners control of their learning reinforcement activities is a good option. Thanks for sharing!

I agree, I also like using word search to add repitition. I let the students pick what type of filler material they want to use. It helps make them feel more in control of their learning.

I use worksheets like crosswords, word search, work building, etc. provided from the textbook in between lectures and breaks. I lecture on a portion, pause for questions & answers & examples then I allow them to do a worksheet to reinforce the material I just covered and take a break. This helps them apply what they learned instantly. I set a timer, when time Is up I move on to the next section of the lesson and repeat. At the end of the day the worksheets are due. If they don’t need extra time to complete them, we have a review session with PowerPoint or hands-on activities.

I trying to mix it up to include all types of learners.

I recently started using the CD in the textbooks and they have great material in them. I used some of the material to tutor a student that was having trouble understanding a concept.

Lynn, mutual respect and trust building are part of the atmosphere of a successful class. Thank you for pointing this out for us to consider.

Certainly acknowledgement when the student does well on the activity. I find this very valuable in creating a mutual respect and trust. The fact that a student does well on an activity like this is a confidence booster also - can give him/her a little more intrisic motivation.

Karen, you are smart to recognize that diversity of ages, experience and backgrounds creates an environment where many can learn from each other.

I find that using a variety of different puzzles helps with the learning process. Having such a different diversity of students you have to keep them all interested, so by using the different puzzle types , i have found that they stay more interested in learning.

I always like to have activities available for students to reinforce their knowledge. Cross-word puzzles are favorites. Having a variety of activities is a bonus. Students can choose between them depending on which activities they benefit from most. Excellent module.

It helps to reveal the students strenghts and the areas where they need more practice.

Elida, it is a good strategy to limit the time of activities so that you can include a variety of teaching strategies each class.

Dr. Lindsay, I agree. If our students can't think or problem solve, they will not be successful when they get a "real" job in the field they have pursued.

Michele Deck

Limiting activities to the 10 through 15 minutes increments keep the student engaged in the class objectives. Occassionally, I struggle to change activities as the students want to keep doing the previous activity.

By utilizing these activities you are reinforcing critical thinking skills, which are a valuable asset in the health field.

Gary, it is a stealth way to learn and memorize that is also fun.
