Post it notes sounds like a great idea. A great way to get them out of their chairs and moving!
Pilar, using post it's can be an effective way to involve students. I'm glad you found a teaching idea you can use.

I really like this idea. Both the kinesthetic value and the ability to prepare beforehand what I want them to retain, as well as the post-its to keep things moving along. Thanks for a great suggestion. I will use it for anatomy AND physiology - maybe getting the chronology of processes right.
Sue, the more involved the students are, the better they will remember the terms.

This fall I will be teaching med term for the first time and I am a little apprehensive about maintaining interest and focus when teaching such "dry" material. I am so impressed with the techniques that the instructors have listed that they use. Because my class time runs for 2 hours, 5 days a week I need all the games and review suggestions I can find. I do have some games that I have used in other classes but it is helpful to see how other instructors convert them to use for med term instruction.
Amy , I agree this can make it active, useful and memorable.

Liz, isn't it amazing that an idea this simple can bring students success and happiness at the same time? Keep up the good work.

I created bingo cards to play in a medical terminology class. The whole class was extremely engaged and had tons of fun.
I like the post-it notes idea. Once we get into the sections/divisions of the body, that could get dry teaching it via Powerpoint. Having a type of mannequin or large drawing of a person on the white board would help them recognize the different kinds of cuts (sagittal, etc).
motaz, I hope these teaching tools benefit your students.

Iam new instructor with new students, two weeks only,i try to find out what is simple class activity for students to start with them.
thank you
I use this same method for the blood flow of the heart.. Super funny..
I cannot really think of a time that I've actually created my own activity in this particular class but I have had my class to get in a group and create a quiz or test and after they have created it give it to me on the spot, give me a certain amount of time to take and I take it.. This seems to make the feel a more involved, and it challenges them, and they really enjoy picking my brain. I do this because if you can create a quiz it helps with your learning.
Suzanne, Thanks for sahring this idea and how you use it.

For pharmacology, I have tried a form of Taboo. I have also done coloring exercises for anatomy and physiology.
I have tried crossword puzzles, word search, and unscramble the words. I give some hints/clues to help them unscramble the word. I will try next time to make use of the POST IT notes.
Martin, that first week of class can be tough for both instructors and learners. It so nice to see the good work you are doing is paying off.

Thank you for that observation. My main focus is for the students to be able to actually use what they have learned. Many times, months after they have completed my course, I have students come up to me and thank me for what they learned. Some stated that they did not fully realize the worth of the material until they found it gave them the necessary skills to easily accomplish assignments in their continuing education. Yesterday, I talked with a student who related that,in his personal business, a band, he was now able to build and publish his own brochures. He is also using Excel to keep track of the Band's finances. He thanked me again for keeping him motivated enough to get past the first week of the class.
Martin, What a wonderful strategy to se if they can actually use what you have taught them. This is the ultimate proof that learning had occurred.

Although not Medical Terminology related, in a prevous forum, handing out bones from a skeleton and having the student technician demonstrate on another technician the proper views neededfor the X-Ray on the particular part of the body. This also helped them knowing which bone connected to the knee bone...(sorry could not resist that one!). Presently teaching "Office" using a "Zero" lecture format so I created individual 'Finals' to allow the students to see how much they have learn. For example: in the Word Final I have them make a new letter style document about a subject that is of interest to them personally. They have to use multiple colors of text and insert pictures, appropriate to the subject they choose, between the 2 column format and several other formatting options that I have chosen for them to demonstrate.
