Pamela, I agree. Without the fundamental principles mastered, nothing can be fully understood.

One must understand the basics, as demonstrated in theory, to progress to a higher level of knowledge
Rita, using a variety of methods is the key. I know you see success with different approaches.

Knowing learning theory will enable me to incorporate different exercises/quizzes/practicals into the curriculum to be able to meet the learning style of my students.
Sondra, individualizing your teaching plans make the process successful for all learners, not just a few.

Knowing different learning theories can help you teach the student and class more effectively. The student will grasp the ideas and learning wn't be as frustrating for them because the teaching style is tailored to fit his or her uindividual needs.
Tina, I agree having a theory and a philosophy behind your teaching methods is a firm basis for success.
Michele Deck
Knowing learning theory gives you a foundation for understanding your learner. you need to have this understanding in order to successfully manage the classroom as this allows for choosing teaching methodologies.
Reading the comments, I was looking for someone who agrees that identifying your learning style as an instructor would assist you in preparing/teaching a class as well.
I am a combination of INTEGER and JABBER (sometimes "jabber" too much. lol)Knowing this will allow me to observe how my instruction style is being received by the students.
Tina, centering your class around activity is the best plan for effective teaching.

Knowing about different learning theories will help an instructor tailor and vary the instructional material to teach students with different learning styles. This will allow the instructor to more effectively convey the material in a manner that most, if not all, the students can grasp. It will also take the classroom from a passive learning environment to an active one.
Colleen, if every instructor sought balance as your have describes, many students would benefit. Thanks!

I think it is important because you need to be able to reach your students to facilitate their learning. If you teach only one way, not all students will benefit. They will struggle. It becomes your responsibility to help the struggles succeed whether it be focusing a little more attention on them with topics they struggle with. I think balance in your approach helps all excel.
Julie, thank you for framing this course contents in relation to your experience.

The value of knowing different learning strategies helps get the message across to all. Quite naturally we want the students to get all the knowledge they can and making sure that we reach everyone is key.
I took theory of learning early on in my college classes, but I do not remember ever learning these methods of teaching different learning styles. I really need to utilize these different methods and incorporate them into my teaching. We usually ask our students during orientation what their learning style is but I don't believe some of them even know for themselves. I plan to use a different way to determine this information and plan accordingly.
Elizabeth, one must keep focused on being learner centered when choosing teaching strategies. You have described the variety of styles, and that is essential to know.
