How does a checklist assist instructors in complying with copyright policies?
One interesting element of this course is the option to take it or not. It is valuable enough to have ethical refresher courses for instructors each year. Consider the volatility of the tech market and the advancements that are related -- changes can come and instructors can unwillingly become victim to it.
Similar to a FAQ, knowing that others have had the same obstacles and to see the solutions - provides teachers with the confidence to move forward. The time spent on research and curriculum development can be derailed by compliance missteps. Administrators concerned with efficiency among teachers benefit from disseminating quick solutions to common problems.
Change is always current and the need for a checklist will help a person to cover all bases prior to the use of the material.

The checklist provides an easier to understand process for determine whether a resource is necessary in a course and when its necessary to ensure permission for use is obtained.

So sorry that you were disappointed in the course. As the writer of the course, I was not given a specific direction, ie. covering content for profits vs. non profits. Every course offering is different and I hope that you were able to glean something from my course. Best of luck.

To begin that sample checklist shows the breadth of the considerations required with regards to using copyrighted materials. It's quite off-putting to say the least, especially for smaller colleges who may not have assistance for faculty to accomplish all this.
I'm disappointed that the course hasn't covered more with regards to for-profits schools as a great deal of the course content in 114 covers the not-for-profit sector.

A Check List for the use of copyrighted works helps not only the faculty member to observe the guidelines of the U.S. Copyright laws, but it also helps the faculty member determine if the material is necessary for the classroom instruction or terminal course objections. The check list can be an evaluation of the materials and the motive of why the instructor wishes to use the materials. It can also ease the anxiety for the faculty member concerning the use of copyrighted materials.

I personally believe that legal matters can be quite complex and confusing at times. If there is an established checklist this can serve as the guide to ensure the proper copyright laws are being followed. It also ensures that all are performing the same steps to ensure they are behaving ethically and not engaging in copyright infringement. The checklist helps instructors navigate through the complexity of copyright laws and policies.
Having a checklist is a great way to make sure that you are complying with copyright policies. We often forget what these policies are and when there is a checklist in front of us, we have a reminder to make sure we stick to them.
The checklist could help reduce copy right violations and could reduce a possible lawsuit.

Having a check list removes doubt and establishes clear steps for the instructor to follow with regard to copyrighted materials. The check list approach can help identify materials that need permission for use and the steps necessary to acquire permission. Another important question is where to store the proof of permission in case of future challenges. Institutions use lots of Adjunct Professors and Instructors. These folks move around frequently. If an issue is discovered on a future audit, the question of proof of permission may be difficult to answer.
