Media Strategies & Instructional Systems Design (ISD) | Origin: EL101

This is a general discussion forum for the following learning topic:

Designing and Developing Online Courses --> Media Strategies & Instructional Systems Design (ISD)

Post what you've learned about this topic and how you intend to apply it. Feel free to post questions and comments too.

Feedback is important for students, perhaps more so in an online course.  Getting feedback from peers on discussions, from the teacher on assignments and feedback through interactive slides such as those used in this course   All of this is needed under normal face-to-face class conditions, but this feedback is needed even more in the online universe to avoid feelings of isolation or operating in a void.

Never thought about the importance of artwork. Adding some color to the Modules will show students that there is more to this course than just text

Since online learning is self directed, I believe an organized format that is easy for students to follow is critical to a student's success and to retaining students in an online learning environment.

The four steps are important to be sure good design and consitency are incorporated into course development.

Very helpful

This course was helpful in understanding where to start

Encouraging peer feedback can be a very useful tool. With the use of an instructor-designed rubric, students can evaluate the work of others and have theirs evaluated as well. Then the students can make corrections that will be beneficial to their assignment. Both students learn and hopefully both students' work improves.

The appendix with the section about writing style was the most interesting in my opinion. It had a lot of valuable tips, and I'm always worried I ramble when I write or if I'm striking the right tone. It was helpful to approach it from a hollistic perspective and emphasize cohesion when writing.

Many interesting concepts.

Multi-sensory use in the classroom is something I look forward to using, it makes me think of me when i was in college. What was the best experiences i had.

Assignments and assessments need to be relevant to the learning objectives/outcomes to help students become more enthusiastic about doing them successfully.  Encourage students to work together (in groups or in response to others), but be cognizant of the situations of the course's student population.   Do they work shifts around the clock?  Do they live in reasonable proximity to each other, or are they spread around the state(s) or world?  Are the technological requirements of the institution sufficient to accommodate your materials, etc.

There are many media strategies, but an instructor should be cognizant of what is relevant to the students, the technical environment of the class, the logistics of the students (are they all living in the same "local" area, or are they all over the world, do they have work schedules that have them working "aroud the clock?"), the material to be covered/learned.  The more relevant the assignment/assessment, the more enthusiastic students are to engage in it and have a successful learning experience.

Have diverse and effective media is a sure way to engage online learners.

By following the four main phases of the ISD model, you can develop courses that are engaging with an appropriate level of rigor. I have a degree in instructional design and hope to use it more now that I have had this refresher on the ID process.

ISD provided information relative to course outlines and distant interaction with students. As good source of information is having the student routine assessement their knowledge of the content. This s a great way for the student to take the 'outside looking in' approach towards their own learning.

Being well organized, preparing lesson plans, and trouble shooting are all necessary in delivery of online instruction.

All of the components to analyze when developing a course.

Using a variety of assessment items allow different learning styles to excel in the course.

In this module I learned about the basic principles of Instructional System Design ((ISD) including the design, development, and media strategies that can be implemented.  It is important to use this information to analyze the ISD that already exists for a course and modify it as needed or to use it as a template to begin this process.  I found the media strategies (six) to be very interesting when we are thinking of innovative methods to implement into our online course.
