Technology
Hello Everyone!
When implementing technology into the online setting it is important to ensure that tools you are using are working properly, that the students are aware of the uses, and that it will further add to the online setting in terms of sharing information. Technology is a great tool when implemented properly with proper guidance. When students are able to effectively implement new information through technology the course will be enhanced.
Kindly,
Dana
Tracey,
You may want your institution to create one that can be accessible to all courses so they can see that the same technology is pervasive through all courses at your institution.
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
I completely agree with you. I see too often we have non-traditional older students who aren't as computer savvy as some of our younger students. These students tend to need additional time to learn how to access and maneuver through the course. I think an introductory computer course would be very advantageous.
Jesse,
That is true! Using it is the key. Do you use recordings for your orientation?
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Certainly! Technology evolves very fast and because systems are consistently changing students and instructors must keep up. In an online environment it is very important to have an orientation I believe for students and new instructors. Technology is a great tool once a person understands how to use it.
Shannon,
Good points! We forget that high school don't have Learning Management Systems and students technology ability is spotty.
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Robert, this is such an important point. When I first began online instruction, I assumed that all students were prepared to navigate the classroom and complete assignments in the Microsoft Suite. I found that this was not the case. In fact, many of them were first time students and still learning these applications. I believe that we have gotten better about preparing students for this type of learning, but I still find that I must work with some students a bit more or make some adjustments.
Dana,
You are absoulutely on target about technology being a good tool, but it needs to be tailored to what you are teaching to be effective.
The only way technology will enhance the learning environment, is if all are on the same page. This means there needs to be clear and concise directions in how to use and how technology will impact their learning. This way the student will be invested.
I believe students need to have an orientation to the online learning enviroment. We can't assume all of them are wizards on how the various functions work in the coures. Many of the students are not prepared to use spreadsheets, word documents and power point software. Students should have pre-courses to get them ready for the instructional courses.
not only is it important to make sure all tech is working properly its important to insure that all the learners are well versed and ready to use the tech at hand..
I think experience tells you that not all students are equal with comfort in technology. Some require a lot of guidance, you would never know they went through orientation.
don't you think we assumes all students are comfortable with technology? We have to make sure that we don't "short change" the proper guidance part. Good answer!
