TECHNOLOGY TOOLS

Technology tools used in the virtual classroom are essential for the student's learning. As students are not in the "ground" class, there is the need to have a way or ways in which the student can effectively interact with the instructor and the other students in the class. As technology has advanced, these various tools assist the student as well as the instructor in effectively sharing their thoughts with the class. With students selecting their learning vehicle as the online environment, the instructor must be able to communicate the course information in a variety of ways that will allow the student to incorporate and understand the information.

Rolando,

I am very interested in the results that you have seen and how the students work online for programming languages. This seems like a very challenging environment to teach online. How long have you been teaching and in the areas of debugging, how effective is this method for the students--?

Linda,

Don't you think you have to make sure that students understand the expectations of knowing and learning the technology to become successful in an online course?

Rolando,

Great use of technology. This aligns with research in the area of visual/audio communication. Great comment!

Greetings… one of the areas that I teach is computer programming and have found that using a “live” chat tool (without a video camera) to “show & tell” not only how use/navigate development tools like Visual Studio, but also the language syntax works great, especially for introductory courses such as logic and design. This approach engages students to ask questions thus learning takes places and positive outcome results are confirmed by lab programming outcomes.

I usually have two live sessions per week, one in the evening and another in the morning on distinct days. Also, sessions are recorded for students that cannot attend. I also invite students to submit questions and/or areas they are having difficulty understanding so that I can address in a live setting.

Todd,

I agree Todd! I do think it is hard to keep up with the technology without some help.

I agree with your point, Linda. It is beneficial to use a variety of both new technology that can "reach" various student learners. There is an effective tool out there for every instructor.
