Melissa,

Great post. I think we have to separate delivery with content. You are right, there are so many ways to present content and interact with students. We need to take advantage of these opportunities.

Elizabeth,

Great response! You are right it is better.

Dr. Kelly Wilkinson

Course content created for a face-to-face course is not appropriate for an online course due to the virtual environment it entails whether it be synchronous or asynchronous. Online learning requires creative and innovative ways of integrating the latest technological tools in providing for the most effective methods for online instruction. This allows the opportunity for many interactive online supporting materials which enhances the course content of the online course.

Your comment makes me stop and think about how I'm responding to students. I often have to scroll down to find additional information from them....I'd bet they're doing the same for me. Just a few changes to my response could help! Saying, "Thanks John for your question regarding the word count standard on assignment 2. Your response should be a minimum of 150 words" is much better than "Write at least 150 words" - don't you think?

James,

True, I have used polling to spur class discussion that can be both synchronous and asynchronous. Sometimes we have to think out of the box.

Dr. Kelly Wilkinson

Anthony,

True, but what makes f2f material inappropriate for an online course?

Dr. Kelly Wilkinson

Dwayne,

You need to engage them and engage them to work with each other. You need to create that atmosphere also.

Dr. Kelly Wilkinson

Dwayne,

I like your attitude. The medium does provide unique ways to reach students and engage them.

Dr. Kelly Wilkinson

Darakshan,

Is it the content or the method of delivery? What would make content not appropriate for online delivery?

Dr. Kelly Wilkinson

Sometimes materials created for face-to-face is not appropriate for an online course because synchronous learning is not always required in an online environment.

Hello,

Well, actually I would argue that certain elements such as quizzes can be used (they just need to be transferred to an electronic format if not already in that format). However, many items may not be used as certain team activities require immediate classroom activity and then discussion in the classroom. This can be done in some LMS's but not always the easiest to carry out.

Thanks, Jim

Jolly,

Great point. I agree that in order to build an online environment you must build opportunities for engagement.

Thank you,
Dwayne Roark

A crucial aspect of face to face communication is non-verbal communication. This is difficult to achieve in an online environment. You must design content and communication techniques for the medium. Online learning is a unique opportunity to reach many with education.

Thank you,
Dwayne Roark

In a face to face session, you can see the students and judge the reactions to the course content that is taught. In online setting, it is not possible to judge student reactions. Therefore face to face course content is not appropriate for online setting.

Penelope,

That is true to a point. It should also be collaborative and cooperative as that is what separates online courses from correspondence courses.

Dr. Kelly Wilkinson

Eric,

That really varies from institution to institution. There are many ways to engage the student

Dr. Kelly Wilkinson

Abundio,

You are correct you have to be clear in all of your expectations. You may need to look at multiple ways of getting your expectations across.

Dr. Kelly Wilkinson

Because it needs to be digital and be written in a discovery learning style. Online students tend to be self directed.

Because on-line course need a good clear guidance, in well written detatil uinstruction, un like Face to face course, the student have the benefit of asking direct question and instant answer.

Greetings.

I have been teaching face to face (several years ago) and online courses for over 13 years. In a face to face course, the instructor is in control of the course material. In an online course, the instructor is managing a standardized course. However, the instructor can use face to face content in a live session.
