Technology Support for Students
What technology support documents or information have you created to support your online students?
BRIGITTE ,
Thanks for continuing the conversation. You have many ideas and your experience is helpful to others.
Dale and Donald,
Thanks for continuing the conversation. Keep your ideas coming!
Christine,
Tutorials are always helpful and you can use them over and over again each semester so it will save you time in the long run.
Hello Dr Crews
I have developed and use a variety of technological methodologies in support for my students. This may vary from power Point presentations with audio and video embedded to explain assignments, PDF files with instructions for students to clarify assignments, scholarly resources. I always tell students of the wonderful areas such as SMART THINKING, online tutoring and learning labs. I always make my adobe connect chat room available for my students to ask question live or the IM feature. These are just a few which come to mind, when asked...

Dr. Crews,
I have created some tutorials in Powerpoint or PDF files that may help students understand some simple topics like graphing in Excel or a summary of online resources that they can use for every unit. Based on students' feedback, they are helpful and save them time.
Do you have any suggestions about other support documents that I can create for my students?
Thanks,
Christine
Donald,
I agree with you regarding the navigation issue. I think we are in the same situation. I do make myself as available as I can with students. In addition to the information I post in class, I also give students my cell, if they need to call me. Not sure if that is a good idea or not, but so far, it has not been abused. Your thoughts?
Roger,
I think announcements are a great thing, but the problem I run into, is getting students to read them. I can post for example an instruction on how to complete a task. I will still get the occasional e-mail from a student asking the question. Had they read the announcement, their question would be answered. Frustrating!
I have created and use an FAQ, that has classroom troubleshooting tips, as well as numbers to call if support is needed. I also use tools like an APA guide (that students love), and tips on conducting library research. I think this has helped a lot, as I have seen a lot of the e-mail questions cut down.
I tend to hold live lectures for students. I also post interactive items such as flash cards to help with learning. I also want to incorporate more hands on items in the course but I post videos to help with the learning process.
Nathan,
Sounds like you provide good resources for your students. Thanks for your input.
Since I teach design courses I have a wide range of documents on hand to help them navigate their operating systems (PC and MAC) as well as the software we touch. There are some general guidelines that help and then we dig into the smaller issues with trouble shooting. Most resources are web based.
Kimberley,
Good idea. When you provide examples it really helps some students understand what they are working toward. I typically share a "B" level example with students and tell them they must put more work into the project for an "A" project. That way they don't just duplicate what they see.
I provide several scaffolding tools to help students complete their assignments. These documents are in both Word and PowerPoint presentations. Students receive examples of how to complete the assignment questions successfully.
Thank you
Samantha,
Good technical support goes a long way. Students are lucky to have that support. Thanks for your input.
All of the colleges that I teach for have excellent resources for students when it comes to technical support so I usually just find myself referring students to their existing information. I do provide students with the web addresses and telephone numbers to access the technical support information.

Sarah,
Citing references can be hard for students. This is a great and helpful idea. Thanks.
Some of the technology support that I have created for my students have been power presentations on the correct way to cite their references. Its has been very helpful to my students,
Walt,
Totally agree. I do the same thing. We have to know where and when they will have difficulty to be there and be ready to help.
Thanks!
Walt,
I too go through the assignments before the students do so that I know where they will have issues. It helps a lot. Thanks!
