we learned the importance of projecting our authority and influence as an online instructor so that the student feels motivated during the course
How Important it is to be able to mange your classrom & be supportive to your students
The idea of using a biography to project authority is a great idea and I will be using that in the future
I never thought about including my academic achievements as part as projecting my authority in an online course. I will include it from now on.
In facilitating student engagement with, and comfort and truct in, the instructor; it is critical that an instructor do at least three things: create and bost a short bio that highlights the instructors professional education, experience, and achievements in the relevant field; engage the group as a whole with relevant material that meets the group at their level; and to the entent possible, engage with each student individually to help ensure they feel comfortable and are getting what they need out of the course.
Opening communication, and opening it early with your students, is very important. Be prompt in your communication, and be ready to be VISIBLE!!! Turn ON your Zoom camera. Sometimes, the online experience can feel like a 'robotic' and impersonal experience to our students. Don't add to that by not being visibly available to them. Do your due diligence and wake up, comb your hair (do your makeup...lol), and be ready to be virtually present and 'visible' to your student. This helps make the online experience less impersonal for them. Smile and be motivating. Students need that.
I learned that it is very important to reach out to each student and get to know one another.
I learned that it is important to create and promote a positive online enviroment by maintaining a open line of communication between instructors and students. Posting a "Bio" (instuctor and students) allows for the instructor to start building relationships and trust with the students in their class. It also allows you to set proper expections from the very beginning.
make it obvious that i am here to help and when im available.
It's important to have my own web cam on, as well as the students, so we can connect better. Students who block their camera are often away from the computer doing their own things.
how important it is to be relational and get to know your students even from behind the computer screen.
When the instructor introduces her/him self, then, uses her interpersonal skills with the students, a relationship can be formed that is mutually satisfying to both the instructor and the stuudent.
Since we don't have the pleasure of being face-to-face with students in the online environment, it is important to provide information about our qualifications, teaching history, and even our hobbies and interests to help build rapport with our students. Another way to engage conversation and encourage learning is to get to know your students as well. They can post a biography on themselves.
I am new to teaching online, though I have been in a student role as an online learner. It is nice to have short statements as a summary.
Being present in your online class is not only about good practice and supporting student learning and engagement. Instructor presence and communication is what makes the difference between a class being categorized as a distance education class v/s a correspondence course. Being actively involved in your online class will promote student success. While online classes provide students with more flexibility and new ways to collaborate, success in the online environment is directly related to how present and engaged the instructor is in the virtual classroom.
Reply to Tina Darling's post:Allow students to know something about you, exactly, they do not have to know everything.
3 important factors in e-learning environment:
. Projecting your presence
. Projecting your authority

It renforced the concept that the enguagement strategies used in a traditional classroom translates to the online enviroment. One can inspire with personal messages and energize with timely feedback.
I learned that the traditional approach is very similar to online instruction
