The importance of properly teaching and assessing to the desired levels of learning can not be overstated. Both formative and sumative assessments should be used to evaluate student learning.

I really appreciated the comments about adapting feedback for students with impairments or special needs - one method may be more beneficial or necessary than others. Also, getting students to peer review/assess can save time in the grading department for us. Sounds like a win-win.
Developing an assessment plan is important and balancing both formative and summative assessment in your course will provide students and you with the information about learning that is occurring. Formative assessments should be embedded in instruction and designed to improve the course learning. Summative assessments, should be designed to prove learning by a form of a test, project, prestation, or demonstrations.
Using self and peer assessments for student assignments, helps develop their skills for evaluating their work and others work. It also helps in providing constructive criticism.
I've did both assessments throughout my college years. I found them to be very helpful. We would also use these assessments in our study groups to help see where each others strengths and weaknesses are.

Peer-assessment is very interesting, must be with anonymity so that the stucents are honest their review and may include more comments. Without Anonymity, students may not provide not honest review.
