Rubrics are often used to grade student work but they can serve another, more important, role as well: Rubrics can teach as well as evaluate. When used as part of a formative, student-centered approach to assessment, rubrics have the potential to help students develop understanding and skill, as well as make dependable judgments about the quality of their own work.
I feel the role of the rubric communicates to the students what they are expected to have in their assignment. It will show them what the instructor will be looking for and gives them a guideline to follow on how to get all the points for the assignments.

The rubric is there so that students know what is expected of them, they feel empowered to do well. It is also there for consistency in grading so that instructor is consistent across the board, it also allows for good feedback and strong self-evaluation by students.

Rubric gives specific guidelines on how assignments should be graded. This should be based on learning outcomes and objectives. This also gives student a firm foundation of how they are enhancing in the subject matter by having a tool to measure their performance by.

While I agree with your post, we as instructors need to stress the purpose of the rubric. Too often students will simply look at the grade and move on. "Why" they received their grade is also important.
I think the rubric is essential to providing guidelines for discussion posts. The more specific the rubric is the better the discussion posts will be. Also the discussion rubric is helpful for the instructor because it will provide greater structure when grading the discussions.
The rubric is especially helpful for new online students because it will help them understand the requirements.

The Rubric is a useful tool which allows students to have an idea of their expectations well before they begin studying the subject matter. It also allows the instructor to evaluate ALL assignments consistantly and objectively. The rubric helps the instructor support his/her evaluation of the students progress. No more "well nobody told me"
syndrome.
