Hello Everyone.

The purpose of the rubric is to provide the student with a clear and concise guideline in what is expected on any submission (communication or assignment) and also it helps instructors assess the students work. In short, rubrics standardize grading processes in some ways.

Jackie

A rubric explains to the students the expectations when submitting assignments and what its clearly expected from them.

A rubric is a multi-purpose scoring guide for assessing student products and performances. This tool works in a number of different ways to advance student learning, and has great potential in particular for non-traditional, first generation, and minority students. In addition, rubrics improve teaching, contribute to sound assessment, and are an important source of information for program improvement.

Sandy ,

I am glad you mentioned that rubrics help the instructor as well as the students. I like your phrase "informative feedback." Without it being informative, it's just words. Thanks!

The role of the rubric is to set clear expectations for the students and to ensure that the objectives of the assignment or activity are met.

A rubric also allows the instructor to map the objectives to the student's mastery in meeting the objectives. The rubric should be included with personalized feedback to provide students with an additional learning opportunity. "Informative" feedback.

Jacinda,

I have used a rubric for discussion boards and I believe the discussions have been richer and fuller because students understand better what they should be posting. Thanks for input in these posting.

I think that the grading rubric serves a number of roles in an online course. First of all it provides clear expectations for assignments and feedback to students from the beginning of the course. The rubric can serve as a guide for students when they are completing assignments and discussions. This will allow students to feel comfortable about the work they are submitting. The rubric also makes grading easier for the instructor. It serves as a reminder to look for the important points hightlighted in the rubric when grading student assignments.

I have just started using a rubric for discussion forum feedback. For those of you who have used it in the past, do you feel that it has helped to foster more meaningful discussions by students?

Thanks,
Jacinda

Nicholas,

Yes - rubrics help both the students and the instructor. One tool that helps many people. Thank you for your input.

To attempt to standardize the grading process in order to make it as objective and consistent as possible for students and the grader.

Miriam,

Excellent! Glad you noted that rubrics help both the instructor and the students. Thanks again for your input.

The role of a rubric is to provide the instructor standardized guidelines for grading. It helps to reduce variance in grading as it should list the important points that are necessary in the assignment for completion.
For a student the rubric can be an excellent guideline to follow as the assignment is completed since it usually lists and explains the "points" that the instructor is looking for in the assignment.
Rubrics are helpful guidelines for student and instructor so that assignments are well defined and there is a point of reference when completing and grading them.

gene ,

Students can learn a lot from the rubrics prior to the evaluation process. When that happens, they projects/assignments are better. Nice job.

rebecca,

Yes, it helps all stakeholders. When one tool can help us all, that's great.

Thanks!

a rubric is a great template to consistently grade student's work & reinforce the outcomes. we can reinforce with consistent feedback & enhance expectations: students know at the beginning what to expect & how they will be measured.

The rubric has a two-fold purpose. It guides the student in knowing what is expected of his performance and how it will be evaluated. It guides the teacher in her assessment of the student by laying down specific quantifications that are consistent across the student population.

Mary,

AND they benefit the instructor as well. Thanks for your input in this forum.

Jeremy,

Right on. Every tool we use should provide students and US feedback so that they and we can improve. Nice job.

Cynthia,

Nice way to use rubrics. We are so blessed to have one tool that helps both teachers and students.

Thanks!

I agree with the rubric role as it helps students gain a better understanding of their learning through the assessment process.

Of course a rubric should be used to keep the assessment from being subjective. However, I believe that is it also used to improve teaching and act as a source of information for program improvement. I personally use them to make sure everything in my course is as it should be!
