Walter,

Yes, they help everyone.

Dr. Tena B. Crews

Dr. Crews,
The role of the rubric is to make everyone’s job easier. By using a rubric for each assignment, the student knows exactly how their assignments will be graded (and can use the rubric in helping her to achieve her goal) while the instructor knows exactly how to grade the assignment which leads to a more objectively-earned grading policy. I have graded with and without rubrics and I know that when I began to use rubrics, the time I spent grading dropped significantly.

Josh Cramer

I think that a rubric serves multiple roles.

1. A rubric is used to clearly communicate expectations and objectives of a particular task to students. This will allow students to know how they will be assessed and give them direction on how to properly and completely accomplish the task.

2. A rubric is used by the instructor to consistently and fairly assess the students' performance on a particular task. By assigning numeric point values to specific criteria, it allows the instructor grade all of the students the same way.

Dr. Tena Crews,
The role of the rubrics is to provide consistency in evaluation; define, understand, and clarify the expectations of the assignment; evaluate all of the outcomes and objectives of the assignment in a balanced way. The benefit of the rubrics is to both the student and the instructor.
Sincerely,
Walter

Sandra,

right on. Rubrics help both the students and the instuctor. I also ask students to evaluate their own work and their peer's work using the same rubric. They seem to understand the requirements more fully when they do that. Thanks for your input.

Steven,

And, they help the instructors evaluate more consistently. They help us all.

Rubrics should provide clear guidelines for the students and instructors as to the expected outcomes from any assignment.

Since most online classes are developed by the school and will be taught by various instructors from term to term, rubrics provide criteria that these different instructors can use to grade assignments for students which should be consistent. For example, student A takes a class and gets an A on a paper, then his/her friend takes the same class but gets a B on the same assignment, it should be very clear based on the rubric why the different grades. This also provides the example of why rubrics are important to students so that both of these students know what is required to receive an A on an assignment.

The role of the rubric is to define the expectations of the assignment to the student.

Martha,

Yes!!!! Rubrics help all involved. Thanks for your input.

A rubric helps the instructor to consistently assess all work submitted. The rubric also privides a guideline for students by providing the requirements for successfully completing an assignment.

Dori,

And, they benefit the students as the rubrics help the students understand the expectations of the project/assignment.

The role of the rubric is to be able to assess the stuents on criteria that connects certain outcomes/objectives to the course consistently.

Elton,

Thanks for brining in another perspective. Keep helping us think about this.

Let's look at it from another perspective. I would also say the rubric acts as a form of "contract" beween student and teacher. For example, the rubric specifically says 40% for Discussion Board engagement on a weekly basis. if the student accomplishes all requirements in a satisfacotry manner, there should be no reason for that student to expect anything less than 40% awarded toward the grade.

What are your thoughts.

Sunshine,

Right on! Both students and instructors benefit. Thanks for continuing the conversation.

Eric,

Yes, help both students and faculty. You can even involve the students in developing the rubrics so everyone is on the same page.

Joanna,

The key is that rubrics help both instructors and students. Thanks!

The rubric serves as a guide to both instructor and students.

It provides students a clear set of criteria by which their work will be graded. It helps them view their work as their instructor will view it to increase their focus on the learning objectives.

It removes much of the subjectivity from the grading process for instructors, allowing for more consistency in student grades. It also provides more focus for instructors so they can spend more time providing constructive feedback to student work and less time on point allocation and grading.

Rubrics help students and faculty stay focused on the course and assignment objectives. Rubrics are objective and establish learning guidelines.
I have developed the use of rubrics in all my courses and use them to guide the discussions and assist with assignment completion.
Respectfully submitted,
Eric Oestmann

What do you think is the role of a rubric?

The role of a rubric is to provide a transparent foundation for communication regarding the course and assignment objectives. It helps the students outline their work; know expectations and all get graded in the same manner. It is a great guide and road map for the students and instructors.
