It will provide consistency for all instructors teaching the same course. It also provides fairness to each student in their expectation of what is expected for the assignment.
Barbara,
Keep in mind, however, that the rubric helps the students and the instructor!
The role of the rubic allows the student to recieve feedback from the instructor, it also allows to students to see if they are applying the concepts of the course effectively.
Kevin,
Excellent. The rubric does benefit both the student and instructor. Explaining the rubric and expectations to the students is a great thing to do. When everyone understands the expectations, the better. Thanks for your input.
A rubric allows a student and instructor to have a clear focus in terms of accountability. However, I normally take time in class to explore each aspect of the rubric and provide my students with examples of where a student met the top end and where they fell short. The rubric, in and of itself, is not self-explanatory to our audience -- it needs to be covered in depth.
I also set up deliverables for extra credit that enable me to see how students are progressing with respect to the rubric rather than assign a due date and expect things to turn out well when the assignments are handed in.
George ,
The key is to remember that the rubric helps the students and instructor. Both benefit.
Ultimately the role of the rubic is that it is an assessment tool to evaluate outcome and objectives of course or project in an objective manner.
Linda,
The main thing to remember about rubrics is that they help both the instructor and the students. Keep using them and keep connecting them to the learning outcomes. Thanks for your input.
A rubic is an assessment tool that helps the facilitator assess the work of a student in a uniform manner. It also helps by setting guides for evaluation that look at the objectives and outcomes of the course materials.
Cynthia,
The main thing to remember about rubrics is that they help the students and the instructor. It also helps students understand the course expectations and what they are working toward. Thanks for your input.
I think the rubric is a guide that can be used to assist the student in successfully completing their assignment.
I tell my students to use the rubric as a guide to ensure that they met all of the objectives of the assignment. I assign points to each section of the rubric so that students can know where they lost points.
Robert,
right on. It helps the students and instructors. I love rubrics. Thanks for your input.
Jennifer,
to me - rubrics are "our friends." They help both the instructor and students. When everyone is on the "same page" it's helps students work toward the learning outcomes. Thanks for your input.
I have rubrics in my class and can appreciate them, as well as my students. It is very easy to justify grading with them. For example, if a student uses no references,is not in word count and has bad grammar, this is automatically 10% off.
On the other hand, I am taking an online class myself that uses no rubrics. So far it has created no issues and allows for some more flexibility in writig papers. However the program is a certificate, not a bachelor, and the level is professional/post graduate so the participants all seem to have the same expectations of each other as well for high quality.
In our courses, we initially did not have rubrics and there was a lot of confusion on how the instructors were grading. Once we established a rubric, the scene was set on our expectations as well as where the focus should be. From an instructor perspective, it also makes grading easier as we are able to grade more evenly among students. Joe gets 2 points off for poor grammar, and Bob gets 3 points off for not answering question X.
Diane,
The important thing is that rubrics help students and instructors. When everyone understands the expectations and knows the work at hand will be evaluated in a fair way, its helps everyone involved. Thanks for your input.
It is an assessment tool. As instructors we can follow student communication. We can evaluate participation in class activities and give student pointers along the way. Students need feedback. Not ever have used such a tool, I'm looking forward to being able to incorporate such a tool and getting feedback from students regarding communication/assessment tool.
Faryl,
Yes, it helps everyone. That's important. When everyone understand the expectations, there are no surprises. That's important. Thanks for your input.
Cindy,
The cool thing about rubrics are that they help students and the instructor. I also use them to assess the project/assignment to make sure the rubric is set up to appropriately evaluate the project and whether the project needs to be changed. Thanks for your input.
A rubric provides guidelines not only for the students, but for the instructor as well. It provides a clear and concise way of letting everyone know what the expectations are for the assignment.
