the rubric provides a solid form of measurement of student's performance and a consistent form of evaluation of the student's work
Rachel,
Right on! Two-fold is correct. Instructors can also use the rubric to introduce the project/assignment so the students can see the connection to the learning outcomes. Thank you.
James,
The rubric not only helps the student, but the instructor as well. The instructor can use the rubric to help explain the learning outcomes "attached" to a project and help the students determine the components. The grading becomes more consistent as well. Thanks!
The role of a rubric is to establish a baseline for grading consistently. It helps the student understand what you are looking for when grading.
The purpose of the rubric is two-fold. It serves the students as a guideline for expectations. For the faculty it serves as an objective measure to grade an assignment or posting.
Mark,
Keep in mind that rubrics help the instructor and the students. Mutual benefit is good.
I see the role of the rubric to provide consistent feedback to students. It gives the instructor a way to measure performance and then communicate that performance to the student. Although the rubric has a degree of subjectivity it does provide a certain level of objectivity to the score.
Miriam,
The key is that the rubric helps instructors and students. You are right with that win-win situation.
Yehia ,
Correct. I like the way you think. And, if the rubric is viewed as a contract clause and someone does not abide by the contract, they lose points. Makes sense. Thanks!
I think that a rubric is a guide for the student to know what is required and to what level to successfully complete an assignment.
Before rubrics, many times, students were not aware of what parameters were necessary and would result in their work and efforts toward completing course requirements in an excellent manner.
Moreover, the professors many times did not have clear and constant fair guidelines from which to grade.
The rubric makes course objectives clear and how to precisely to accomplish those objectives at the various levels of mastery. It is a win-win situation for all.
Ultimately the class syllabus is a contract between the instructor and the student. A rubric can be viewed as a contract clause in which the first party (the instructor) specifies to the second party (the student) how they plan on proving true on their obligation of fairness and proper reward of the students work. When the student is not rewarded a full mark, the instructor should utilize the rubric to leave feedback for the student outlining why they missed points with the proper correction for their mistakes.
The role of a rubric is a guideline for students to use when doing an assignment. This gives the student an idea of what is expected out of them when completing an assignment, project, etc. When the assignment is graded, if a student has a question on a grade that was given to them, then the instructor can refer back to the rubric, to back up the grade that was given. I personally like using rubrics, because gives me an idea on how much I need to put in for an assignment.
Patricia,
Helping the instructors be more consistent in their grading and helping students undertand the expectations is the role of the rubric. Thank you for your input.
So that instructors are grading and they are all on the same page. The student also knows what the expectations of them are by using a rubics like this.
Reginald,
I love rubrics. I use them all the time. I just finished setting up my class which will start in January and I have all of my assignments, rubrics, etc. online and ready for students to review. I have found that I have to remind the students that the rubrics are there for them to review prior to them completing assignments/projects, etc. Thanks for you input.
Lynn,
Rubrics help the students and the instructor. The students will understand the expectations more clearly and the instructor can assess their work more consistently. Thanks for your input.
The role of rubrics is performance expectations. When presenting rubrics with scoring components it allows the student to see what expected for each grading scale. It also works as a great guide for those students that are motivated as they conduct their work utilizing the rubric as their guide. For instructors, it helps us stay systematic in our efforts to grade fairly and consistently.
Reginald
A rubric offers a fair and equal way for the online instructor to grade. It takes the guess work out of what did I give the other student for that type of response. I really liked the rubric method.
A rubric is a standard by which performance is measured. Without this structure, quality cannot be assessed and the purpose of the class is lost.
Rubrics help level the grading scale. They force me to fully read the students' posts and consider them as a whole -- not just as individual sound bytes. Because I have to justify, I can't give Johnny a 5 and Susie a 3 just because I think one is a better student than the other. No matter how nice one student is or how obnoxious the other is, everyone gets the same grade and the teacher's emotions are kept in check.
