The role of the rubric is to provide students with a framework which communicates the requirements involved in the assessment.
William, I agree with a rubric being a standardization tool which is necessary for fairness.
Marie Moran
I think the rubric role is to assess learning in a way that is fair to all students. It also helps students understand how their work will be evaluated.
Daniel,
It's just great to remember that rubrics help the students and the instructor as well. The student can more easily understand the expectations and the instructor can use the rubric to more consistently evaluate the students' work. Nice job.
The role of the rubric is to make things more interesting for both the user and the student to know what is expected before they begin work on the assignment. It makes it easier for them to complete the assignment and easier for us as instructors, to grade them.
Alfretta,
These are all perfect descriptions of a rubric. Nice job. Don't forget that the rubric also helps the instructor be more consistent in his/her grading. Thanks again!
Tanya,
Right on! Any time students have less complaints, they typically understand what is expected of them and can act accordingly. Don't forget the rubrics help the instructor too as they are more consistent in their grading. Thanks!
QUESTION: What do you think is the role of a rubric?
I think the rubric takes on several roles in the classroom. These roles include: a) it provides a mechanism for assessment relative to students understanding of discussions and assignments; b) to provide objective grading practices that will display consistency in the grading; c) it acts as a guide for students in terms of looking at the content and quality of their work, as well as the work of their classmates.
The role of a rubric is to provide students with feedback that stems from a set of guidelines. Students like to know "how many" points they will receive for various parts of their assignments. They like feedback that helps them improve their work. I always feel that students have less questions (and complaints) about grading when there is a rubric involved. There usually isn't any question as to "why" they received a certain score.
Brian,
That is the key. Rubrics help the students and instructor. Thanks!
It helps not only the student but the instructor define the objectives and meet those objectives when assessing the individual.
LE,
I love rubrics. They are just as helpful to the instructor as they are the students. There should be no surprises in grading for either of you. Nice job.
I use Rubrics extensively. When I was teaching my first class the Department Chair suggested that I develop rubrics for grading assignments to speed up the process and consistency of grading. Since that time, I have found that developing rubrics helps me focus on the outcomes and improve the quality of my assigned work. They also help the students to understand exactly what I want them to include in their work and they give me an easy way to explain where the grade came from, when challenged. I strongly recommend the use of Rubrics to all of my peers.
The rubric service as an assessment guideline for both the instructor and students. It offers students the opportunity to focus their work on key project criteria and provides instructors with a clear and organized to assess learning.
Noreen,
You are right on! Rubrics help both the instructor and students.
Rubics set guidelines for grading. The student knows whats expected of them. It also allows the instructor to grade consistently.
Michelle,
I like the word "standardize" and I would add the word "guide." Guide the students and standardize the consistency of the grading. Nice job.
Mary,
Correct. Guide is the key work you have used. Understanding the expectations and how they will be evaluated (consistently) helps students. Thanks!
Paula,
Correct. As you've noted, the rubrics help students understand the expectations/outcomes and help the instructor grade in a consistent manner as well. It's nice when one thing helps everyone. Thanks!
Tipton,
Right on! The key is that the rubrics help the students understand the expectations/outcomes, but help the instructor grade in a consistent manner as well. Thanks!
