I would incorporate Facebook into the course. Facebook allows corporation to set up accounts and allow users to view their products and trends. I feel that I could link some of those accounts to the material covered in the course.
LE,
You make a great point. We as educators need to realize we can have down time. We also need to realize we can separate personal social media from professional social media. I want down time too!
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Yes, with very strict rules. I do not want to be overwhelmed with tweets from students. I prefer to have a situation where students help each other and I can chime in with corrections or added information. That keeps me out of the heavy volume of tweets. Also, I only tweet from my desk and do not use my cellular. Students may like being "On" all the time but I am an old guy who prefers to have some down time.
corinne,
It can be as simple as have students create a video blog with their phone and upload it. Have the students determine how they will provide microblog with your expectations embedded.
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Samantha,
It is also a way to get it to their phone. Their phone is attached to them. . . always.
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Samantha,
Try it. Students appreciate faculty that are willing to try it. I have used a twitter feed to enhance my f2f courses as students can ask questions during a lecture and if another student answer they get extra points. You may be able to do something like that in your online course.
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
LE,
You can get information to them quickly. Would you let students run the tweeting?
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Media sharing sites are typically accessed through the Internet by going to their particular website and viewing or downloading the content-related media. This allows anyone with the website’s URL to access the media. Therefore, when using media sharing sites, online instructors must carefully consider with whom they want to share the media. If the instructor of the online course only wants to share the media with students within a course, he/she must ensure the media sharing site allows for establishing this sort of security.
Media sharing takes place through a variety of social networks and digital communities. This includes sites such as YouTube, Facebook, wikis, blogs, and various other outlets. Through these platforms instructors and students can not only store and share media, they can aggregate, upload, compress, host, and distribute videos, audio, games, applications, images, and other media. Videos and images (photos) are two of the most popular things that are stored and shared. Media hosting and sharing basically nourishes and sustains social networks and digital communities.

This seems to me like an appropriate way to use microblogging. Sometimes they need reminders of due dates in a quick fashion. Students nowadays seem to respond best to quick updates over long emails.
Samantha
Hello
I use Facebook for my personal life and think I will try to embed it in my courses. When I polled my students they told me Facebook is old and they use Twitter and Instagram. I can not really get into Twitter. I just have a problem with following people. I have to get over this. I was trained in Edmodo and I am thinking about using it for my face to face courses.
Samantha Carlo
The use of Twitter as a communication and information source seems to be the most fitting use of social media right now. Tweeting reminders to students about upcoming assignments and maintaining routine communication and accessibility to the students through Twitter would be a huge first step.
jacob ,
That would be interesting use of Twitter.
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
In my 20th Century Literature course, each student could tweet what they feel the main theme of an assigned short is.
Denise,
That would be a great idea. Current issues would really work and incorporating video would allow students to view and review in a multimedia environment.
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
I believe that micro blogging is a good way to incorporate activities in my online class. The best way would be to develop discussion. Perhaps post a video of the current topic and then get posts from the students about their thoughts on the topic.
Claire,
I think i am going to use it as a way to facilitate research in my graduate courses. See, even the facilitator learns from the discussion!
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Claire,
How could you use it to provide hints, clarification, or reminders to students. I didn't think I would use texting in my courses but the students asked me to and I tried it. It works great as a communication tool.
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Virginia,
I agree. Delicious would be an interesting tool to use in an online course. Wouldn't that surprise some students.
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Christy,
You make a great point. You have to make sure you can control the information. It is important students know what is expected of them.
Dr. Kelly Wilkinson
Elizabeth,
That works and students really like it. I also text them ideas for discussion.
