I agree with some that maybe 140 characters is not a good limit.
Dawn,
That is how I use it. It is a great way to be more concise. Students find it frustrating but that is one of my goals.

With twitter you only have 140 characters but on facebook you have more. Using Twitter can improve your writing because it forces you not to run on and to be more concise.
Kendrick,
That is how I use it. It does keep everyone in check including the professor! it works.

Lesley,
That is how I use it! I hadn't thought about keeping my comments to a minimum. . . :)

Grace, you make a very good point. I actually would not have thought to utilize twitter as a way to engage students in critical thinking. However, being that there is a character limitation, I can see how creativity and critical thinking would come into play. It is definitely more challenging to communicate in a 14o character limit than it is to communicate in a 500 word report. All extraneous wording must be omitted. Good point!
Also limiting the characters forces instructors and students to be succinct in their post. It really can eliminate the "wordiness" in writing - a nice side benefit!
Grace,
That is true. That is actually how I use it.

These are the typical limits but it engages critical thinking in terms of the ability to summarize the most important issue in the tweet.
Steven,
I don't understand what you mean. The number of characters is fixed. You don't have a choice. This is not a clear answer.
