Rubrics just seem to be one of the best methods for assessment. It provides a guide for students and instructors. There seems to be less obscurity about expectations with rubrics.

I feel that all assessment should be defined first inside the rubrics. This way the student knows the requirements and can begin learning the elements required to complete the task. After which I should be able to see to what level they've mastered this particular topic.

I would have to create a rubric using some of the examples shown in this module to adequately assess students' use of blogging. I think it's important to focus on the quality of the blog, including grammar and spelling, which might not be the case so much with tweeting.

Gemma ,

Nice start, I would also determine how you want your students to write regarding formality. this can all be done with a rubric.

I've never done that but I do plan to include Bloging in the future. I can start off my indicating the amount of Bloging post is required per week and the word count recommend. Give them guidelines and score it just as you would an assignment.

Melinda ,

If the blog is used to evaluate writing and/or the skills and knowledge defined by you in your objectives of the lesson and/or course.

Michael,

I am impressed with the evaluation of hashtags. I hadn't thought of that.

Dr. Kelly Wilkinson

Michael,

Interesting insight. I agree with you and I like you used the term dynamic rubric. Also, would you have students evaluate the blog?

Dr. Kelly Wilkinson

Christi,

You have a great plan. You do want the students know know what is expected of them.

Dr. Kelly Wilkinson

Michael,

You have a great plan. Would you do peer evaluation also? Just thinking. . . .

Julie,

You make a great point; "why reinvent the wheel0?" This will ease your workload and help students understand the purpose of the work.

Dr. Kelly Wilkinson

Bennett,

This is a great plan. Using rubrics gives students the expectations and the instructor objective guides.

I would evaluate their blogging like I would any other writing assignment -- by using a rubric that has been created with the lesson's objectives and outcomes in mind.

I could assess the use of a students blog based on the quality and number of their post, the number of hashtags included and the relevance of credible sources.

I think that blog usage should be evaluated using a dynamic rubric that can flex and change depending on the topic at hand and the focus of the class. Participation, content and usage behavior (including "manners") are important factors to be considered.

Hello,

I would use a rubric to assess my students. I liked how the information shared that reflection is a great way to assess the students to ensure they understood the content. I would provide the rubric prior to each assignment that would require some type of blogging activity.

I would use a rubric that is broken into 3 categories: structure, content and presentation. I would assess each of these categories based on how well the student demonstrated mastery of each of the Levels of Cognition found in Bloom's Taxonomy.

As an online instructor I would utilize previously developed rubrics to assess student blogging. These rubrics would be shared with the students when discussing the expectations of blogging.

Providing students with a grading rubric for the blog would be appropriate

Key elements of the rubric include:

- Technical proficiency with blogging
- Writing style appropriate for medium
- Depth and range of insights demonstrated related directly to topic
- Additional information/resources provided (making it a destination site)
- Level of engagement (number of blogs posted by student and fellow classmates)
