I learned that having a sense of community and appropriate communication is imperative to ensure that there is no miscommunication and isolation within the online learning environment.
Ensure to address any issues that the students may have with a solution and by using thier own words as a summary to ensure that they understand the solution to thier problem
It is important to vary your communication to your participants. You must set the tone and expectations for how communication should occur. The expectation should occur at the beginning. You should be able to incorporate varied styles of teaching to adjust to your student's styles of learning.
Non technical skills are just as important as technical skills in online learning and we must take those into consideration as well.
I plan to incoroporate supports to assist my students in non technical supports such as reading and being effective communicators.
I liked seeing that 80% of our waking hours we are communicating. This brings home the importance of teaching it in an on line program
Students have a diffculty focusing because of environment and its up to the online instructor to create a safe place online for teaching can be received and learning can take place. However, this is a 2 fold agreement where the study needs to be a good online citizen, do not plagiarize and respect guidelines for proper online communcation.
I have learned that online students need to develop good citizenship, reading and writing skills, participatate and be actively engaged in the online activitie and be able to effectively communicate. I will ensure that I include information on acadamic integrity policy in the online sylllabus.
Each instructor needs to have clear expectations for communication. Using short cuts and slang may sometimes be appropriate but depending upon the class and format, it is reasonable to ask for communication to be done in a more formal manner.
Preparing students to be successful online learners should be outlined in their course syllabus. The online student should be open-minded. self-motivated and have great digital critizenship skills.
Not a fan of this module. How many people read small online group posts and know if work is plagerized. How many heard people say something many times but never knew where it came from. Obviously if something is flat out copied and pasted it is wrong. I just don't see this as rampant in small classroom environments.
Online citizenship is important in an online course because students need to be taught the proper communication methods for respondind to emails. I liked that this course emphasizes the fact that Texting language is very different than email language, and the two should be seperate.
Clear and concise communication is key to online learning. Starting with the syllabu, students should know what is expected of them.
Using technology to create a Community of Practice allows students to collaborate ideas, learn from each other and remain actively involved in the learning process. It provides all the oppertunity to bring their expertise, understanding and a platform for their voice to be heard along with hearing others and learning from each other.
Learning appropriate communication skills in an online class is wonderful preparation for communication skills needed in most careers.
Professional communication should be consistent, error-free, and void of texting or instant messaging (IM) language. Professional communication is consistent with the rules or regulations for communicating within the course, or other environments.
When engaging with others, whether in person or remotely, soft skills are imperative. It's important to set the guidelines as to what is appropriate communication in a variety of online formats in order for students to understand boundaries and proper netiquette. I plan to apply this in Rubrics.
This module makes the point that online instructors are first teaching online learners to be good online citizens and then teaching content. Communication needs to be clear and professional. Community building is just as important in an online class as in a face to face class.
The most important aspect of an online course is effective, consistent communication. When communicating there is the message sent, receiver, feedback provided, and then back to the sender. Students must see themselves as members of a community and participation is essential to seeing themselves as a member.
CPA ... what a wonderful acronym! Clear, Professional, and Appropriate ... very helpful!
Clearly communication is of utmost importance in designing and explaining course objective, assignments, projects, expectations and between instructor, students and student to student. It sounds strange to me, but a simple phone call can solve many problems before they impede student progress.
