Communication Style
It is always helpful to reveal the communication leading style of our students. This is helpful so that the presentation delivery can be mixed.
It is so helpful for students to become aware of their personal learning styles. There are a number of excellent (free) websites that they can use to discover their style and get hints about ways to improve.
Indeed, all written communications have a "tone," so it's important to verify the type of tone your message conveys before you send it. Familiarizing yourself with the connotations of words and learning to use the passive voice to your advantage can really improve your communication style.
I agree that in presenting information, the delivery should be mixed up. Some topics allow the use of visual aides while others do not. Also some things are better "said" then 'emailed". I often read and an email and wonder if there was a tone attached to it. Oral communication could avoid this in some situations.
I totally agree with your statement.
I agree. Especially with online classes, some students hide behind email. With a phone call you can establish a comfortable environment with your tone. This allows the students to open up which allows us to really see what the root issue is.
Communication styles are very important in all aspects of life. Everyone has a special way of communicating or expressing in their own unique way. This is a vital lesson to learn and to teach.
I couldnt agree more. In a classroom of several students each one responds to different methods of teaching and communicating. What works for one doesnt always work for the others.
Ethel,
I agree that students in the classroom or online classroom environment have very different learning styles. Last week, I spoke and emailed three students who were not doing well but were participating in all the requirements. My only thought was that their study habits needed to be reviewed. Before I made the final assessment I telephone the students (online course) and talked to them about what they were doing when studying for the quizzes. What I found out was that 2 out 3 did not have good study habits. I shared some study techniques that I used when going to school online and they seemed to like the sharing. After the phone conversation I sent an email to them recapping our conversation. The third student did not have good study skills either but also had personal problems which may included just not putting enough effort into her educational goals.
Communication through emails is necessary but I think the message and intent is sometimes lost unless you either speak to the person face to face or call them on the telephone when face to face is not possible.

Since everyone have a different learning style, mixing the communication style is very necessary to accommodate each individual learning ability and style; Audio, visual, personal interaction and otherwise.
