Marie,

I ahve found the most effective way to deal with theis issue is to turn off the email program until you have time to address only email. My OCD keeps me checking them in the middle of the night if I wake up. I find my self feeling resentful, though it really is a "self-inflicted wound."

Jeffrey Schillinger

I use a to-do list to prioritize my goals not only for the day but for the week also. I try to look at the daily goals and weekly goals so that way I am always prioritizing what needs to be done for the day and the week.

I would completely agree. Email is a huge time issue for me. Even out of work, I receive emails from work and my OCD makes me open them asap. Then the next thing you know I am knee deep in emails and getting off task of what I was originally doing.

Brittany,

Thank you for this post. What are the things you consider when setting priorities within your list?

Jeffrey Schillinger

I make a list of things I need to accomplish in a prioritized list. As I cross things off I know I am taking care of things. It keeps me motivated!

Zillery,

It is sometimes tough to align personal and corporate goals, especially short-term goals. It is easier when the company's mission lines up with one's own mission.

Jeffrey Schillinger

Funny, this is happening today. I look at a couple of items; what is the deadline, does it fall inline with the company mission, and also is it going to affect other items in the company. It is hard because something that is important to me will not be important in the big picture.

Zillery,

How do you decide upon the many conflicting priorities? What are the key things you must consider?

Jeffrey Schillinger

Candis,

Thank you for this post. What are the one or two things you consider most often when you are assigning levels of priority?

Jeffrey Schillinger

I use the ABC method
How I distinguish between these is by
A most important and will number as well within the category

B important but not urgent and again number within the category

C on the list but not really any sense of urgency

Of course the list is subject to change and reprioritzing

When I leave work each day I write a to do list for the next day and they prioritized by what is happening in the company that week. The next day I will start off by checking emails and revisiting my list to make sure nothing has changed. What ever did not get completed will roll to the next day.

I try to prioritize my tasks each day by setting goals for myself and making sure that I alot enough time to complete my tasks while still allowing for interruptions

Armin,

Great plan. thanks for sharing this.

Jeffrey Schillinger

I analyze my project and break it down in tasks. Then I try to find out which tasks have a timeline (internal as well as external). Next step is to make an assessment on the required time for each task. From those timelines backward or forward planning is required. When the draft of the project plan is finalized, I try to identify periods which might have conflicts due to overlap with other projects which will most likely draw some of my ressources. For this work I like to include the team to get their expertise and not to miss impacts of other projects I might not be familiar with.
The final project plan, approved by the boss, is published internally to allow all involved to plan their contribution and to block time in their respective calendar.

I use outlook and also set up reminds prior to the times to give me time or organize myself for a meeting. I also use my note book with for to do lists. But I love the idea of focusing only on 4 to 5 ideas which I am practicing now.

Shawna,

Thanks for the detailed plan. I think others who takes this course may find this useful.

Jeffrey Schillinger

I keep a weekly/monthly planner that lists days by 15 minute increments where I write in all dead lines, appointments and so forth. The 21st of the month I review next month and make my adjustments and notes. Fridays I review the next week and make my adjustments. Daily I make myself a to-do list by category: Work section, Home section and MUST DO section including the highest priority of either by time. Then I compare this with my Outlook and Planner. As the priorities and goals are met I adjust....

Rafael,

Please elaborate on your response. I am not sure what you are trying to express.

Jeffrey Schillinger

When we categorized the "goal" as the most important objective that we must achieve.

Rafael,

Thank you for this well-written post. On what basis does something become "critical?"
