Balancing Stress
There are times when I feel overwhelmed by the last minute tasks assigned on a weekly basis. I don't understand why people procrastinate and then expect everyone else to jump through hoops. I can sometimes understand an occasional change coming down that needs to take place immediately, but not on a regular basis. That stresses me out the most. If I procrastinate about something I have to do then I must suffer the consequences, but if someone else procrastinate and get the information down to me at the last minute and expect great and wonderful things to happen I get very upset. If at all possible in the workplace I believe supervisors can and should not wait until the last minute to pass along information to the faculty and staff with immediate deadlines.
Deon,
Positive thinking is a the answer to negative conversations. I would recommend you read a book called "Positive Talk" by Lou Tice. Expectations of negativity will only spread negative thoughts. Remain positive and it is contagious.

Deon,
In our careers it is common to have outside challenges when trying to accomplish our goals in a comfortable structure. When we are charged with a task that is outside the normal structure causes for stress. We adapt to these challenges by using our expertise and value to the organization. It is because of your talent that people call upon you. This is when you will use your stress relief practices to get through the challenge. When accomplishment is realized we all take a breath of achievement.
I understand what Gale is saying and I feel this happens a lot at my workplace. It is frustrating. One thing I've learned is not only can I not change it, but I can expect it. Therefore I do what I can as soon as I can because I never know when there will be an urgent project that has to be done immediately but I know if one comes, I will be able to give it my attention.
Lisa,
Performance management is a lot about staying in touch with your employees. If the employee is up to date on the expectations for them they will aspire to new levels. Beyond knowing the expectations each person enjoys the support and praise they will get when they achieve at the higher levels. Their personal self worth grows when they experience your approval.

Great advice on time on task plan. As managers, it is also crucial that we work one on one with our employees to be sure we/they are doing this as well. Review time is the perfect time to flush out some of these issues, and create a plan for helping them deal with meeting goals and dealing with stress.
Matt,
Good points and remember a good leader will know the limitations and potential of the staff. Most people don't know their potential. Wit guidance and support we can motivate people to succeed.

So true, Gale! Part of being a good LEADER (not just a BOSS) is setting reasonable expectations. Unfortunately, that is something that dosent always happen. Having said that, It's also important that we all show some flexability during some of those times that cant be helped...
Gale,
When projects or goals are to be met it is best to create a time on task plan. Reporting progress is important to having goals completed on time. This can be measured depending on the size of the project and time necessary for completion. As the time progresses a time management scheme needs to be developed and communcated to the people who need to know.
