Motivating Students
Can anyone tell me what tools they have used for motivating students?
Reo,
We love those stories! The bring the human touch to all those who hear them.

You can also motivating them by give them a true story that happen to one of the grad student. I use myself, cause i was once there.
Jacqueline,
A great idea. You are reaffirming their reason and causing reflection of their goals.
Patty Aronoff
In my experience, i motivate them by recapping what they have told me about their current situation and help them reach their goal. Reminding the student why they took the initial step of calling in to set an appointment is important, because i want to know what triggered that idea. Make them see the bigger picture, paint their dream so they can live the reality.
Sianna,
Great post! Everyone wants to be recognized as as individual. We need to show to all the students that we do care and they are not just another number.

Motivating students is such an important role that staff plays in order to help students acheive their educational goal. Students need motivation as they take their journey towards starting a new path, and ultimately graduating from college. In order to effectively motivate a student - you should care! Each department should work together to ensure that a student receives the information that they need in order to set students up for success. This can be achieved by having motivational activities at school, challenges, or by simply listening to a student's concern.
Does anyone have any good ideas or activities that they have used in order to effectively motivate their students?
Melissa,
Support from all areas is key to the success of a student. Whether it is from family or friends, fellow student or teachers, staff or community, having that strong base can mean the difference between success or failure.
Patty Aronoff
I believe motivation is a great key to success. Alot of students don't have motivational support so I really believe this is where we come in to help motivate the student throughout the course of them being here.
Stephanie,
So cool! All the activities you mention bring everyone together as a community. We support each other and applaud achievements.

Maritza,
Support is a very influential motivator. Students need to know support is there when or if they need it.

I think it is important in the beginning to really make the prospective student feel as if they belong to the school by helping them to visualize themself as being a part of it all. Along the tour, our school has many posters/displays that recognize and honor current students and graduates. We have a poster of a graduate with a mirror where the face should be and I've decided to make that a tour stop by asking, "Look in the mirror. That could be you at the end of next year!" I also like to stop and point out the posters that from afar look like they just say "2010" with a picture of a diploma, but upclose it has the names of all graduates from that year from all schools. I will mention that we like to show support of our graduates by recognizing them through out the halls. And finally, we have display cases of student work, where I would say, "You never know, maybe one day that will be your work in there for all to see!"
Motivation starts with the admissions process and the original interview.Understading the trigger points behind their desire to achieve success in life has everything to do with their present situation, home life, financial status and life in general. Being able to communicate with a potential student and family members or support individuals has everything to do with how motivated they will be as students. Expectations by the institution are also important to motivate the prospect since knowing that the more discipline they display the more successful the outcome. Faculty and staff in general are the support while in school, yet, an institution's philosophy of support of what happens to them on a daily basis, is and will always be the main ingredient to keep them motivated.
Becky,
It takes an entire school to create a graduate. No matter what your role is at the school or at what stage of the student progress, we should all be supporting the students. Having that sense of community is integral to everyone's success.

At our school we have tons of resources of creating magic with our student body and we have little fire burner pow wows in the morning, mid day, and inthe evening to download and update the team on what is going on! They love feeling like they are a part of something.
Stephen,
I wholeheartedly agree! When the passion shines through, it is very catching.
Patty Aronoff
Albert,
It is very motivational to be able to look back at one's journey to see their travel to success, their challenges and how they have overcome those challenges to meet their goals.
Patty Aronoff
Mara,
Make sure you get signed releases to use any testimonials from the students. These are powerful tools in marketing or motivation.

I believe when the instructor is motivated and enthusiastic about the field it encourages the students to feel the same way. When you are excited about what you are teaching, the subject becomes more appealing to those who are learning.
I would say to be realistic with the student. Show them that school is the gateway to success and by showing them you would let them know your personal testimony on how you have reach that state of mind. As well as what types of goals you have accomplished already.
