When speaking with a student.
Speak with enthusiasm. Make sure you are smiling while speaking with a student because it comes through on the other end.
Tasha,
I am sure you can remember a time when you received excellent customer service. That makes everything so much different.
Patty Aronoff
When speaking with potential students, family members, etc. we should always strive to give excellent customer service and make everyone feel wanted and appreciated. My previous sales experience as taught me that people may not remember what you said, however, they will ALWAYS remember how you made them feel! Treat others as you desire to be treated; with respect and dignity.
Jennifer,
A smile can change any setting! It's contagious.

Greatng the prospect student with a smile and explaining what is going to happen during the admissions process will keep the student a bit more relax and less nervous.
Beatriz,
To listen is to learn.
I think listening is the key
Jennifer,
Enthusiasm is a great motivator and keeps students at ease.
Entusiasm is a must! Students are typically a little nervous when seeking a new path in life so it is good to put them at ease by speaking with enthusiasm but also giving them the facts about the program so that they can weigh in on whether or not this will be the best fit for them.
Everyone is absolutely right about greeting with an enthusiastic smile and active listen to the concerns/questions of the prospective student! I usually invite them into my office and discuss their passion and impression of the program and what entices them to apply to our program. I am blunt about our expectations and what it takes to survive our program. I don't disclose the information as a scare tactic but I try to express the seriousness of our program and what will be expected out of them if they are admitted. Additionally, I give them my card with my personal information and encourage them to call me anytime with any questions/concerns.
Scott,
Trust...honesty...integrity...compliance.
Juan,
You learn so much through active listening. Excellent tip!
Alexandra,
We all like to be recognized!
Alisaundra,
This is where effective communication techniques come into play, an important attribute for admissions reps.
When working with students and prospective students, it is vital to effectively listen to their needs and expectations to ensure the best customer service and best practices are provided
Thats very true! feeling confident and using the students name can really help them feel important.
Active listening is very important, so we can recap back to the student what they have expressed to us. This shows them that we really care and are paying attention to their needs so we can better assist them.
The student must feel comfortable and be able to trust you during the career planning session.
Yasmin,
It's about guiding them to their full potential.
I believe that the way you should conduct an interview is by first listening to the student, trying to understand what they need and what they are really looking for. Give them all the tools and resources that you may have about that particular career and the school. Always be positive and energeric especially in this economy where students may not feel empowered because of so many personal problems. Convince them to make a sacrify so they can achive their full potential and succed.
