applicants who don't qualify
Our institution offers only 1 program of study, for which many applicants are not qualified. Is it appropriate to recommend applicants take classes at other institutions so that they may qualify in the future?
Chiquita ,
Understanding your students and why they are taking this step will assist you in finding the right fit at your school. Students will respond greatly to the personal approach. They don't want to be just another number.
Patty Aronoff
Greg,
Correct! It would be the responsibility of the student to do that research.
Patty Aronoff
It's important to get to know your applicants personally. You always want to recruit the best possible candidates. The only way to do that is to spend time to get to know about them in addition to why they want to attend your institution.
I would assume, however, that we have to be careful about recommending where to take those courses - meaning we shouldn't be recommending specific institutions since we're not expert, correct?
Colette,
If it is not a right fit, then the student will drop. It doesn't help the growth of your school to enroll a student only to have that student withdraw and not complete the program.
Patty Aronoff
Admitting students who do not have appropriate experience and requirements is not an option - even when you're at risk of not making numbers.
James ,
That is the purpose of the interview process. As admissions staff me are able to discern whether or not this is the right fit for the student and the school.
Patty Aronoff
As an applicant go through the admissions interview an agent should pick up on if the applicant is qualified or not for the program. Also to the applicant know that are steps that he/she can take another to become qualitfied program.
MASSIEL,
Finding the right fit of the student to the school to the program is critical to their success. If any of the elements are not the student is at risk of dropping out of school.
Patty Aronoff
It is important to always see the conditions of the student, and if not caifica to give the opportunity to other options.
James,
They will respect you for that! You never know what life will bring and as they proceed they may come back.
Patty Aronoff
Piedad,
Students should have choices. There should not be all one way or another. As life brings its challenges today may not be the day, but the student will respect the honesty and opportunities.
Patty Aronoff
I always advice the prospect students in the different choices they have when they don't qualify for admissions at the institution I work for; so in the future they could became elegible.
It makes sense to show the applicant a possible path that will help them further their education even though your institution won't be able to help them...
Lisa,
It shows that you are caring about this student and not just another enrollment. Providing the new options will bring you a very good reputation.
Patty Aronoff
This is very good to know. We also only offer 1 program and if the student does not qualify with us, I would like to give them other options. I was hoping this would be allowed.
That is the best thing to do,if a person is not qualified. At the institution I work at it is what we do in order to let them know the proper channels to being able to attend in the future. Many people appreciate you taking the time to steer them in the right direction. Keep it up if you are doing that.
Susan,
Your applicants know this information up front so you have full disclosure. It also says much about your school in that you make sure you are taking care of everyone.
Patty Aronoff
Jessica,
Excellent! Taking time shows you care and that you have their best interest in mind.
