Placement opportunities after graduation

It is necessary to talk to students about realistic expectations. it would be nice to see how other reps go about having this conversation and yet avoid putting a damper on the students expectations.

I agree with this reply. Time and time again, we have the same situation that the student hears that we offer job assistance and twists the words around to that we offer jobs. We go over this at the very first moment that they step into the admissions office that we offer job assistance and we go over the realistic opportunities for each program.

If the student is hard working and has a passion in the field they are going into, are placement department does a wonderful job staying connected with the students to give them leads. The students do have to earn their position. There have been times when are placement department has even given leads to students many years later.

We automatically discuss placement and what we offer to the students to prevent any confusion.

More students need to understand that Career Services is there to guide and direct them into the right direction. So many students feel as though Career Services needs to find them a job with out putting in the hard work themselves of searching for and applying for position they feel they are fit for. Sure we can help them find a position that is posted, but they need to do work on their end to secure the position.

We operate very similarly to this. We have two Career Services directors here to help them with their needs.

I think it is important to discuss the responsibility of the student for securing employment. Too many times I have heard graduates from various schools complaining that the Career Services at their school did not "get them a job". Students need to understand that there are services in place to assist in finding a job, but ultimately the responsibility lies with the student, whether it is actually showing up to an interview, maintaining employability, or even approaching career services for assistance.

We do the same thing. We do not want to build false expectations
