money back financial aid
Leads often ask if they qualify for financial aid will they start getting checks at home? It sounds like people use this so they dont have to work. We cannot answer financial aid questions but is this happening?
Unfortunately, it is and we see it alot. Many people receiving public assistance are required to work or go to college to receive their monthly benefits. These students are easy to spot. Sometimes, they are so bold as to admit that this is the reason why they are coming to school. Sadly, even when we know this, we cannot stop them from entering, as long as the pass their entrance evaluation and meet all other enrollment requirements. You hope that they become interested in their classes and their reasoning for coming to school changes to the right reasons.
This is one of the biggest scams schools have to deal with. Due diligence by schools is a must.
Some students geniunely want to go to school but are in a bad spot and need additional help - like bus fare, child care, housing.
Instead of having them tempted to "go where the money is," I would like to see students have better access to programs that can help them with specific issues.
It happens in some fashion. Whether they ask that specific 'at home' question or not, there are students who expect to have their education over-funded. In effect what happens is that the school requests a funding amount that ends up being higher than needed and then refund the $ to students. Supposedly, new rules are going to eventually put an end to this practice. Hope so.
