It definitley helps to be knowledgeable about what you offer when you are asked to assist a prospective student in their decision making process. I get the sense that it's important for you to be well informed and prepared to help your students when called upon to do so. Keep it up!
Product knowledge is essential, especially when you're helping to inform prospective students about the programs you offer, what the outcomes might include, and your school in general. What are some other areas of product knowledge that you think would be helpful to know?
There's little doubt that all four of these are critical to your success with students. When you consider these four components, which of the four do you believe is most important and how do you feel it impacts your success?
The Prospective student will probably ask you to help him or her making a choice .Without a familiar knowledge it will be impossible to help this student out.
You must have knowledge of the Product that you are selling.
product knowledge, sales skills, people skills, and attitude
Professional skills
Attitude
Product Knowledge
People Skills
Thanks for your insight, Elizabeth. People skills and attitude are important elements in helping to develop a strong bond with your students. These are skills that will help to improve your relationships not only professionally, but personally too! Ultimately, all four elements are essential for success in enrolling students.
Two of the four elements are key for success - People skills and attitude. People skills are important because many of our customers are seeking assistance from professionals at a school setting rather than sitting in front of computer and filling out a registration form. People skills are very important as well because it builds trust and rapport to connect with our prospective students. Many of our customers have also been through difficult life experiences and they just need someone to listen to their situation without being judged so more importantly you need to have a great attitude as well.
Although all of the four key skills for a sales person are important, I personally believe that the most important skill to have when working in an Admissions Department is “People Skillsâ€. Exemplifying ‘People Skills’ to perspective students will allow the student to feel comfortable, which will allow him/her to truly open up in what would be the best decision/fit for their lives. Then, ‘Product Knowledge’ is imperative when sharing vital information about the school to the student.
So true, Madelyne. All the best to your continued positive attitude and success working with your students.
Thank you for your insight. Attitude is so important in what we do and providing students with secure positive information.
Thanks for sharing Rita. It looks like you believe product knowledge is the most critical skill for an admissions professional, followed by people skills and attitude. Tell me, what is it about product knowledge that you believe makes it the most important skill for the admissions professional.
1-knowledge, 2-people skills 3-attitude
Thanks for sharing your insight, Yvonne. The attitude we choose can definitely have an impact on the relationships we form. Choosing to be positive and encourage your students to share what they hope to achieve is a wonderful way to demonstrate that you care about their success. Keep up the positive attitude!
Attitude can be most critical. Someones attitude can make or break a relationship. With this being said a positive out look towards a student will encourage them to ask questions and feel more comfortable in their learning enviornment.
Awesome tip, Jamie! Thanks so much for sharing this with everyone. I love the idea of "hitting your mental reset button" for each student. Keep up the great work.
Shannon I would love to share a tip! I call it "hitting my mental reset button". I consiously take time to reset after every call (I work at an online college) because I believe each student deserves the best I have to offer. I need to reset because a challenging call can drain my energy or cause my attitude to be negative. The next prospective student deserves my best not the leftover of me after a challenging call. I mentally take the time to reset so that when I make that next call I am 100% again. I do not want to take frustration, prejudice or preconcieved notions from one call to the next.
Thanks for sharing Jamie. I couldn't agree with you more. All four are crucial elements in the process, but a positive attitude is key. I'm curious, could you share a tip on how you ensure you have a positive attitude throughout your day?
