Student with Kids

How do accommodate students that have Kids

Students with kids can often times be more driven and focus on career and program completion. They often times are trying to be trend setters for their children..

Students that have children are not a concern. It is a good way to get to know your potential candidate and fully meet their needs.

The majority of the time when a student comes to the initial interview he/she brings his/her children. My admission's director goes with the flow. He will ask questions about the children and find out their interests. He has crayons and coloring books for the children to color while he interviews the parent. He will ask them about childcare arrangements. If the parent hasn't thought about that. He will give them a list of resources in the community where they live. This is one of our biggest issues with attendance. The sick child, is unable to attend school or daycare and we try to be proactive and ask what backup arrangements has the student made.

NATALIA,

Great! It is important to offer information customized to the prospective students situation. Thank you for your post!

I make sure that is the shift the they want and I offered online classes to accommodate the fact the they have kids.

Mirtha, That is a great service point! Do you find that you students benefit from this, as well?

at our school student daycare is provided and best of all its free that really helps our prospect students with this need.

Ana, It is important to go with flow, we agree. When a student brings their children, it can provide the admissions counselor with a lot of information. What are some things as the admissions counselor that you can do for a student that is a parent?

Students with kids are not a problem. If they bring their kids to the interview I go with the flow the last thing you do to a parent is say anything negative about their kids. You lost the prospective student on the spot if you dislaike the fact that they brought their kids to the interview.

Maria,

This is a great idea. Sometimes just reaching out to local businesses (such as childcare organizations) can make it easier for those students needing this service. In fact, some may even offer student discounts! Thanks for sharing!

i gather resources within the community that offer affordable childcare for our students

That's a great question Teresa and one that I will open up to the forum for best practices from other admissions professionals. Everyone please share ways you work with students with children.
