Sylvia, Excellent! Keep working on all forms because your students preference may not be yours. Nicely done.

Barry, Face to face is good for most people. How can you adjust your preferred method to your student's, if theirs is no face to face?

My preferred method of communication is face to face. You get such a better feel for how the other person is responding to you. Written communication is the form that I most need to work on. It takes time to think and formulate the best way to say something.
I prefer to meet with individuals in a face to face format. I find it is easier to read physical ques than to guess what a person may be trying to really say. It is also a great way to show off the school and discuss topics that may not normally come up in conversation through telephone contact. I am working on all of my methods of communication, which is why I am taking this course.
my best Communication Methods is face to face contact, it allows me to be able to convey my excitement of the opportunity being discussed
My preferred method of communication is via email, but I need to work harder at being specific and not lengthy.
For me, emails create a trail of communications that I can always go back and refer to. It's also easy to include others when necessary. Face-to-face communication also works well, but I some times get long-winded or feel a little nervous about the direct contact. This has not been a huge problem, but one that I have taken notice of when interviewing candidates, conducting meetings, etc.
Merary, Interesting! It's great that you meet their tone. It is great to be aware that your preference might not be theirs, and adjusting your method to meet them where they are. Nicely done!

My preferred method of communication is Face to Face, this is definitely the most effective way to transmit ideas, agreements, advices, options and even policies without misconception; and we can get a immediate feedback from our recipient either verbally or by perceiving peoples reactions.
The method of communication that I need to work on is by Telephone, I feel insecure when I have to offer a solution to students that are expressing their concerns or informing me about a particular emergency, because I can't see their facial expression and be capable of perceive if they are honest with me or not. What I do first, paying attention to their voice tone. Next, I schedule an appointment with the student, as soon as they return to the school, to inquire if everything goes well since our last conversation by phone. This way I can use my preferred method of communication face to face.
I really do find that body language is the most essential part. I work on that every day. The student always look at you as there model.
Laura,
It's great self-awareness to realize that you need to work on your telephone communication. Preparing ahead of time is an essential step! Check back in and let us know how you're doing!

My preferred form of communication for work is e-mail. My work deals with a lot of numbers and technical data that are not easily understood face to face or over the phone.
I am trying to improve my phone communication, I am quite guilty of picking up the phone without being prepared. I am making an effort to prepare for calls.
Thanks for your post, Daulphine!
Face to face communication certainly makes understanding the other person much easier. It demonstrates great self-awareness that you realize the areas in which you need work. With continued practice, you'll achieve the same comfort with telephone conversations as you do with face to face!

My preferred method of communication is face to face. I prefer this method because it provides a true picture of the information being given or received.
I need to work on phone presentations and patience
Esteban,
It's great that you are aware of your areas of opportunity and are working to strengthen them. Do you think if you can build rapport with someone on the phone like you do in person, you will gain the same self-confidence?
Dr. Jean Norris
my preferred method of communicating is face-to-face because i feel more confident in myself.I need to work on my telephone communication skills.
David, Great point; and well done with your review of written communication. It's always best to be clear on what you are imparting to the student.

Writing is my communication method that needs the most improvement. I seem to think ahead on many ideas or solutions that I catch myself having to go back and reword or smooth out what I am trying to communicate to the reader. I spend a lot of time proofing and editing any written communication. The Face to Face communication is my most effective since it is simply a free exchange of information between two people. Eye contact is a major part of face to face communication as it displays confidence and engagement with the person you are communicating with.
Russell, That is a great way to demonstrate listening skills, and a great practice to keep up. Thank you for posting.

Yes, if you develop rapport on the phone, once you meet in person, it is even easier to connect. I take notes while talking to students on the phone. When I meet them I will let them know I listened. How did your boys do in their football game? If they mentioned a sick child, I will say how is he/she doing. It shows I listened and that builds trust!
My personal preferred communication method is the Face to Face communication because it allows me to see and observe my client's reaction immediately though their verbal and physical feed back. Usually their facial expression tells you if they are on track with your messages and/or requests or not. Therefore, I can adjust my communication style gradually to fit my client's communication style and at the same time deliver the message and request to the client.
The communication that I need to work on is the written communication because when facing a new or potential client it usually took me a few email communications before I can tune into the right communication channel with them. However, after this module, I have learned that borrow words of wisdom from someone who is an expert and create a refined statements that can be used interchangeably will help me to avoid unforgiving situation.
However, I believe the inter use of the face to face communication with the telephone and the written to follow up clients makes the best communication method to target and close a business deal. Even the deal is not close at beginning, over a time period of telephone and written follow up the most of the clients response positively and some of them even refers other potential clients to me. As the result, inter use of the three main communication components seems to be better and effective than just adopting one of the three.
