bad publicity

bad publicity is better to avoid, but for many schools it is unavoidable....in this case it is better to have the right ratio between the bad and good publicity, where of course the good publicity needs to over weigh significantly....

Hi Vi
Interesting reminder about word of mouth. Sometimes it is good and sometimes not so good. Some studies show that any word of mouth has benefits. Who knows. Bottom line is to capitalize on good news and learn from and fix the bad news. The are all messages you can learn from . thanks, Susan

Hi Vi,
You make a very good point about the need for helping the students to see the positive aspects of the education they are receiving. This way they can help promote the school as a result of receiving quality instruction.
Gary

I didn't realize either that one could please all of the people all of the time. Dear ol' Abe got it wrong!! I think we just assume there will be the bad along with the good. In educational institutions, I believe it is important to remember that students are good or poor 'word of mouth' publicity agents. It is very important that we find ways to turn them into public relations ambassadors for our schools.

Hi Zara
Good questions. The goal of every business, and school, is to develop a sound reputation. Then when bad things do happen you can count on your years of credibility. But bottom line - you can please all of the people all of the time. Good luck, Susan

Thanks Dr. Shulz for your reply.

Do you think that a business, especially such as educational institution, where you have many students, many different backgrounds, many different ages.... that does everything right will overcome bad publicity? Do you think that a business with many clients and customers can make everyone happy?

Interesting point Zara. One way to overcome bad publicity is of course not do anything that would be seen as bad.Another is to develop relationships with local press so they have the facts about your school. The more they know the less likely they will just print what they hear. They are more likely to check it out with you when they get bad news. Thanks, Susan
