Having an Impact
After reading this module it is interesting to see just how many things go into play when it comes to accommodating students with disabilities. It's not just in the classroom that they are having issues, it is at home trying to study and trying to take the examinations. It was a real mind opener!
Being an instructor in a field like massage therapy, a lot of students come in thinking that they just have to memorize a routine, but once they figure that actually classes with learning is required.. I'm amazed at how many obstacles students have and that they have made it as far as they have. But then I realize they made it because of the accommodations set forth for their disability.
What you see is not always what you get...people can hide things/behaviors well is they have done it enough. We need to look at the big picture...or step back and re-evaluate the situation. It is not only fair to the student with the disability but also to us... when we realize the situation we can be of more help and the outcome is much better.
