Linh, This is a great challenge to address. What are some other ways, aside from email, to reach the adjunct instructors?
Dr. Jean Norris

Helena, Thank you for sharing. What specifically can be done to improve all the areas you mentioned?
Dr. Jean Norris

Andrea, Thank you for sharing this. It's good to know that a solution to the challenge you identified is being managed.

Strengths are availability to staff and students. Willing to go the extra mile to aid students and school to achieve their goal. Creating positive atmosphere for our students and staff.

Challenges are lack of training for military veteran student issues

In our department I think the mystery shopper would have an overall positive impression of our department. They would find an articulate and talented staff that is very approachable. The only challenges I think they would find are our facilities as they get crowded for the number of students

Admission representatives who are eager to recruit new students. They act as advisers to prospective students on the admissions process, and answers questions and offers general information about the school. Our school consistently has a high admission rate on the program that I teach; but there is also a high attrition rate that in my opinion is due to lack of proper screening of potential students.

The institution’s admission standards do not always align itself with the program offered. Some program will require higher admission standards; otherwise students will pass admission criteria but find themselves having difficulty finishing the program they signed up for.

It gives me the impression that some dmission representatives are not familiar with the program and give false reassurance to students. Fast tract programs are not for everyone and admission representatives play a vital role in getting students to the right program where they will have the greatest success of completion.

Warm conncections and enthusiasm for education.

I think one of our strength is that the instructors work well with each other and strive to help out whenever they can, such as covering for lectures or clinic sessions. We basically all get along pretty well. But one weakness is that there are many part-time instructors who do not have the same knowledge of every day operations as the full-time instructors do. Sometimes it gets diffucult to relay the information to the part-time instructors, but we try to improve that through email by including EVERY instructor.

Observing and if needed working on improving the non verbal communication, tone of voice, eye contact, the degree of warmth an employee radiates toward the customer are what will speak the loudest and remain the longest in a customer's experience.

Strengths would include the availability of extended hours or open labs for student tutoring/mentoring; teamwork between members of the on-site group; facility/premises, just to name a few.

Challenges would be lack of permanent leadership presence for the department. It is something that is being worked on, but it is important to note.

I feel the same way at our workplace. I just feel that it is necessary to have a welcoming enviroment in every workplace. This would give a more positive environment and get rid of the negatives.

Nani, Agreed. What are challenges you speak of specifically?
Dr. Jean Norris

There are some inconsistencies that should be clarified and addressed. This would allow the students to feel more "heard" and less suspect of true leadership among instructors. Calibration among instructors is paramount for unity and respect and a smoother run program.
