abdalla, what have you learned from these surveys and how has it changed how you do your job?

Loren Kroh

If students aren't very engaged in surveys, and if the results aren't beneficial, how else can we get student feedback?

Our campus does several things to ensure student satisfaction:
1. We complete the Noel Levitz Student Satisfaction Index annually. I am now the Noel Levitz coordinator on our campus, which is a new role for me, but I have seen several idea implemented over the last year based on the Noel Levitz results.
2. We also complete quarterly IDEA surveys. We take the feedback from the surveys and create focused trainings for our faculty, based on the lowest score areas. This has been working well to provide students with a better learning experience, and we have seen the IDEA survey scores go up.

Our campus is having a hard time with persistence, though, and we aren't able to pinpoint exactly where the problem is. I am interested to learn what else we can do to ensure better student satisfaction.

At the end of each term the Students are given a survey to rate the instructors, and the school in each department, for their services and performance.

Bettye, how does a pre/post test minimize the drop out rate? What's DI?

Loren Kroh

As an instructor, I may lose two students per class due to unforseen circumstances. In order to minimize the drop out rate in my class, I have a pre/post test. I address each students learning style due to their needs and weakness. This takes planning and using DI within my instruction.
What strategies are you using in your class to address retention?

They make sure that the the instructors are good and knowledgeable in all aspects and also the people in the institution are willing to help in times of need.,and if the students are satisfied they tend to have good grades and look forward to every opportunity the school offer.

Stacy, thanks for sharing this example. A great example of how to use the data that's collected and using it in a proactive way.

And you're right. We often settle into a routine; sort of auto-pilot and simply do the same rote presentation time after time.

Kennedy , what's this mean? It seems to suggest that there isn't a communication effort now.

Jaime, how have you used the results of the survey? How often do students actually visit advisors?

Loren Kroh

I sat with my Dept. Chair and went over the evaluations. One class was very happy with the way the class was run but another One felt that it was too much lecture/powerpoints. I then changed my teaching method. I cut out a lot of the powerpoints and made it more interactive for the students. Sometimes we get caught up in covering the material and we don't realize what works for one class may not work for another.

Implement a communication effort

In the middle of each quarter students take a survey about the instructor and the services offered. The academic advisors doors are always open.

... and then what? How have you used these results to improve?

Loren Kroh

The students are given surveys to rate their professors and also their overall experience at the University.

Anything above a 2.5 will result in a meeting between the General Manager and instructor.

The average score of all categories for the campus is used in performance evaluations for the General Manager. As far is if they are used for instructors or other positions at the campus, I can't answer that as that is not my area.

Is there a threshold score that will cause the GM to meet with an instructor? Is the score used for performance evaluation?

Loren Kroh

You must be pretty tired by day's end on Friday. How much time do you spend with each student? What are the other students doing while you meet with their peers? How do they respond to this weekly update?

Loren Kroh

Getting support from school staff and instructors makes it much easier for the student to accept the commitment they signed up for.
