Stay the course

We try and help all students by giving them a chance to retake a course for free provided they give it their all.

I try to let all students know the consequences and amount if they don't even try. This is done one on one for their sake and try to not push be ask why are you here? It is a great thing you are doing, you are better than most who did not get selected to be here and lets not ruin it now.

How can you determine that students are not taking advantage of such a situation? is there a limit to how many times they can re-take the course?

Yes, published guidelines are needed before a course is offeref for re-take. Guidelines may include: time missed, academic failure, personal/medical reasons, legal/court/jury duty etc.

There are very strict guide lines for the policy. The instructor must first appeal for the free retake and prove that the student is worthy of the special case. They must finish the course even after they have been notified they have failed. This gives us an idea they are here for the right reasons and true to the course.

Are there published guidelines for retaking a course? How do you determine that they are "giving it their all"?
